About Toni

I have tutored students in elementary and middle school for 6 years. My main focus is on reading and math! I not only provide students with the basic tools to succeed in their subject but I also ensure that their experience with me is long-lasting. Students learn life skills such as - learning not to ever give up on themselves, being patient with themselves, and understanding that they are more than capable to be successful - they just have to put in the work and believe in themselves. Learning these tools will help them elevate into strong-minded students now and in the future.

I got started teaching when I volunteered as an assistant at my local church community summer program! After this experience, I knew that working with students and families would always be apart of my career experience in some form or fashion.

I recently worked for a tutoring company entitled "Grade Potential" and the NC Education Corps. With Grade Potential, I had the pleasure of working with a 3rd grader, a 4th grader, and a 7th grader. Our focus was on reading and math. This was for one school year and it was online. During my time as an NC Education Corps English Tutor, I worked with Lexington City Schools as a reading tutor for elementary students. This was for one school year and it was in person. I have also served as an ambassador and a tutor in Guanajuato, Mexico for two months (Yes, I know a little Spanish :).

About the lesson

I have a meeting with the guardian via phone call to discuss the current position of the student. During that time, I ask key fundamental questions about the student's personality, preferred ways to learning, current struggles, etc. During the first meeting with the student, I take a few minutes to introduce myself and to get to know them. I then use the rest of the time doing practice activities so I can see where the student is currently at in their subject area.

I have worked with students from elementary to middle school. The students I work with are all from different parts races, religions, etc. I love learning about my students and what makes them unique!

I would advise the student/parent to look for a teacher who genuinely enjoys the process of teaching students. Every student is different and sometimes it can take a minute to understand what works and what does not work for each student. With that being said, patience and persistence are important. Especially since COVID-19 has affected the school systems and how students learn.
