About Harlan

I have been informally tutoring my peers and siblings since middle school, but began officially tutoring in my junior year of high school. I was a student of the instructor who led my school's writing center and they personally asked me to start tutoring because they were fond of my work, so that is what I did.

I worked as a writing tutor for two years in high school but have been informally tutoring for much longer. I have also trained newer tutors in how to conduct sessions.

About the lesson

Initially, I will both introduce myself and get to know the student a bit - it is important for them not to feel like they are working with a stranger. I will ask about any upcoming deadlines, the general topic that they wish to receive guidance in ( as well as the specific class / course ), if they would like to address any particular assignment, etc. Then, we can address the assignment / subject.

I have worked primarily with high school students in the field of language arts ( English, literature, writing, etc. ). Writing is the subject that I have the most experience with. However, I have also done work with students in mathematics, science ( both hard sciences and soft sciences ), etc. I have been trained in college-level and AP materials, as well.

I participated in various AP classes / exams, have completed an associate dual degree program ( General Sciences and Liberal Arts ), and am currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program, so please do not hesitate to ask if you are unsure about whether your desired topic would be applicable. Generally, I am comfortable with students in middle school - ( undergraduate ) university.

Only select a tutor who you are personally comfortable with and who you feel will be able to adequately meet your needs. If you do not mesh with the tutor's teaching style, disposition, or whatever else, do not feel pressured to stay with them. I believe that this component is integral to the student-tutor relationship, which is why I insist on becoming somewhat acclimated with one another before deciding whether or not to launch into material. If you feel that I would not be a good match for you, please just say so - I will not take any offense whatsoever. I would much prefer to be told up-front that you do not think I would be the best fit for you rather than have you needlessly waste your time.

I recently visited Montana and had a spiritual experience there unlike any I have experienced before. I am leaving it vague so that it sounds more mysterious than it ( probably ) actually was.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I ( the student ) already know about this topic? What would I like to learn about it? What am I having difficulty with? What would I like to learn to do better ( writing, reading, etc. )? What are the specific parts that I do / do not need help with? Am I struggling more with the content itself or with the process of learning it / executing assignments?

Details

My rate primarily depends on the complexity of the subject matter, the length of sessions, how far I need to travel ( if the student prefers in-person instruction ), etc. Generally, I charge $10 - $30 per half hour ( or $20 - $60 per hour ). I will offer each student an individualized rate adjusted to their particular situation and that rate will only change if the student's circumstances dramatically shift.
