About Samantha

My name is Samantha Maldonado. I am 22 years old and I graduated from high school in 2015. I have never been an official/certified tutor, but I have tutored family and friends children ever since I graduated high school. I've tutored special education kids, and kids in grades 4-12. I have a strong passion for teaching kids and motivating them. When I was in school, I had some amazing, unforgettable teachers who went out of their way to make sure I didn't give up and to make sure I achieved my goals. This is the foundation of my commitment to help my students, whatever their goals may be. One of the biggest factors of tutoring is having patience. I didn't realize how much patience I have, until most of the kids I tutored specifically noticed and mentioned that I don't get upset or annoyed when I have to repeat myself or ask them questions multiple times. Also, it takes a lot of patience to deal with special education students in any way. I didn't think that I had it in me but I really think that working with kids is what I'm meant to do. I want to tutor while I go to college, to specialize in teaching kids with learning disabilities. my goal is to advance academic progress and help sthdents develop critical thinking skills.

I would have younger friends and cousins coming to me with homework or needing help with studying for quizzes/tests. They would come home with better grades little by little and they would be so confident when taking their quizzes/tests. I loved the feeling of them coming to me and telling me how great they did because of my help. It became something I enjoyed doing. It became a passion.

Go over the main goal/ what subject we will be working on and what we are aiming for.

Ask a few questions that will let me know what level they are at currently and if it's the right level they should be at for their age/grade.

Go over the current working level (grades achieved) - this will allow me to prepare material based roughly at the right level of my student.

Go over the expectations of tuition - I need to know whether the student is looking for long-term tuition or a one-off lesson.

I've worked with kids in grades 4-12 and special education kids in 9th grade and up.

A student of mine has a learning disability. She is in 9th grade and her reading/math is at a 4th grade level. She has very bad memory so it's hard for her to study for quizzes or tests. She came to me last minute about a quiz (on a book they read in class) the night before. She admitted to me that she had no idea what the book was about and that she dazed off whenever they would read in class. I helped her study for 2 hours. After the 2 hours, she was able to tell me the rising action, climax, falling action, conflict, etc. I also had her take a practice quiz with my own questions and she passed it. I even asked her the next day to see if she was able to remember. She remembered everything and also got a 100 on her test. Her mother was very surprised and is looking forward to more tutoring sessions.

I am not professionally experienced, so it would be unfair for me to charge a normal tutoring rate. I will start off at around $15-20/hr based on the subject, grade level, age, etc.
