About Jasmine

I am extremely passionate about teaching and education and have had years of experience in academia. As a high school student, I successfully attained credit for several AP courses across a variety of subjects. While attending St. Mary's College OT Maryland, a public honors college, I completed two B.A. degrees in biology and anthropology, respectively. I went on to pursue my M.S. in Animal Welfare and Poultry Behavioral Neurophysiology at the University of Maryland. Although I never saw myself as a teacher, I fell in love with teaching while working as a T.A. for undergraduate and graduate students as part of my M.S. program. Own my own, I led multiple discussion sections and taught a DNA laboratory. Upon receiving the M.S. student of the year award for my dedication to teaching and successful defense of my thesis and graduation, the university hired me as an associate lecturer to redesign and teach a 400-level animal science course under the Animal Welfare Education Challenge Grant. Throughout my teaching experiences, I received excellent course evaluation reviews from my students. I am currently in veterinary school but hope to pursue a career in veterinary academia and teaching once I finish my D.V.M. degree.

In the meantime, I would love to be able to help others on their personal educational journies and instill a sense of curiosity and knowledge. I strive to teach classes in a practical case-study way and provide mnemonics and tricks to help information "stick" better for students. I provide an emphasis on teaching students HOW to learn so that they have the tools to continue to learn beyond the classroom when access to teachers is limited. I understand that students have different learning styles, and I am able to meet those varying needs by teaching the subject matter in multiple formats to fit personal education goals. If you are looking for a patient and flexible tutor, knowledgeable in social sciences, health sciences, ethics, or writing at the pre-college or college level, please do not hesitate to reach out to learn more about how I can help you!

I love it when I see the light bulb go off! My goal is for a student to walk away feeling confident about key concepts that he or she can apply to real-world situations. My goal is for students to grasp these central understandings and learn how to learn so that they can succeed beyond the classroom when I am not there to guide them. This independence makes a student adaptable to any real-world demand.

I have previously worked as a a T.A. for undergraduate and graduate level students. Upon obtaining my M.S. degree, I worked as an associate lecturer and redesigned and taught at the University of Maryland. During my time in college, I also helped with an annual Girls in STEM Education Enrichment day.

I would first like to meet with the student to see what specifically he or she is struggling with, how he or she learns best, what has (and has not) worked for him or her in the past, what his or her personal educational goals are, and how long he or she would like to be tutored. Setting up an educational plan is key. For each session, I would like to come up with educational learning objectives. By the end of the session, the student should ideally feel comfortable with these objectives. At the beiginning of the next session, we will return to the learning objectives to ensure that there are no questions, and, if the student wishes, I can provide assessment opportunities to ensure that these objectives are met.

I have worked with all kinds of students! I am most comfortable teaching high school students and undergraduate students in health, animal, and biological sciences. I also have a strong background in anthropology and English writing and definitely feel well-prepared to teach those subjects as well.

Look for someone who works for you! People learn in different ways and it is vitally important to find a teacher who clicks with your individual learning style. It is of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable asking questions, but that the teacher pushes you to think and not just to learn the material but to learn HOW to learn.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are you a visual, auditory, or tactile learner? Do you pick things up easily or do you need to spend some time looking over the material first? What are your strengths? Weaknesses? What resources do you usually turn to for help? What learning strategies have worked best for you in the past? Do you get more out of study groups or do you prefer to study on your own?
