About Carol
I have taught in public schools for 24 years, and tutored for about six years, from K through college. I started tutoring online with Zoom in the spring of 2020, due to Covid. I have lots of material in and through my computer, which I have used to help students in grades one through five over the past three years. I can help students to improve word analysis, reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. I am especially qualified (Masters Degree) in Reading. I'm still certified for Elementary K-8, and Reading, All Levels, with SEI endorsement (Sheltered English Immersion) through June of 2024. My in-person teaching began in 1971 in Westwood, MA, and my last in-person job was Title I Reading Tutor in Canton (2019-2020). I was offered the same position in Canton for the 2020-2021 school year, and more recently as well, but because it was to be in person, I felt that it would be too dangerous, due to Covid. I am happy to meet with any prospective students and/or their parents over Zoom in order to help them to make a decision about whether I would be a good fit with the student. I am also confident that I can help anyone of any age who needs help with English, grammar, or writing. I live in 02072, and would be willing to work with a student in the home, or at a nearby library, for a small additional fee, if work by computer is not possible for you (if the location would be within 15 minutes of Stoughton, MA). For online work, I am available Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, anytime from 9 am through 7 PM. My fee is $60 per hour.
I enjoy connecting with students and sharing their enthusiasm when they realize that they are getting better at whatever it is we are working on.
I also enjoy the gratitude of parents (when working with children) when they see the improvement in their child's performance.
My mother was a teacher, and I was the fourth of six children to follow in her footsteps (the first four all taught in schools, and the other two taught in other capacities). My first position was Grade 2 at Martha Jones School in Westwood, fall 1971 through spring 1978. The following year, I was at a different school (Downey) and left at the end of January (first child).
Graduated magna cum laude from Boston College, Elementary Education. (National Teacher exam, perfect score)
Masters in Education with focus on Reading on the Elementary Level, Boston State College (now U Mass, Boston) GPA: 4.0
At least 30 credits beyond Masters from various colleges and universities, and decades of professional development in Westwood, Norwood, Holbrook, and Dedham.

I find out from the parents if they are most interested in reading, writing, vocabulary, or all three (or another subject). If parents know the student's reading level, I would begin by having the student read a book at that level on Epic (shared screen). Then I can see if the student needs help in phonics, or if there is no problem, we would try the next level. If parents don't know the reading level, I can do a reading assessment by sharing my screen with the student. For writing, I help the student to develop essays with several paragraphs, and as they write, I keep notes on their spelling, and help them with grammar and using powerful, interesting vocabulary. If the student is older, I let them tell me what it is they need help with, and I work with them to make sure that they will succeed.
Most of my years of teaching were in grades one and two as a classroom teacher. I have also spent time as an in-school Title I Reading Tutor, working with students who were performing below grade level. My remote tutoring, which began in March of 2020, was at first with public school students who had been enrolled in Title I, and also included students who were reading above grade level, but needed to improve comprehension.
If a student is hiring for themself, I imagine it would be an adult, looking to improve skills in reading , writing, and/or grammar. I would tell them to agree to just one lesson, with either person able to make the decision after that lesson to continue or not. I had an adult student for grammar improvement, and she and I had very good rapport. That is important (in working with any age).
I had been working with a young student remotely for a while, and he had begun inviting me to come to his home, and to attend a family wedding. I told his parents about this, and said that, since their town adjoined mine, I'd be willing to stop by briefly, if that would be okay with them. We agreed upon an evening after their workday, and the four of us had a very pleasant visit.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should pinpoint what they most want to improve. They should think about what hour(s) during the day or the evening would be most convenient for them in terms of being available to concentrate on a lesson without too many distractions. They might also consider their finances, and decide if they want to put a limit on the number of lessons right from the start.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience had by the students of Carol.
Deadly! My wife and I greatly appreciate the help which Carol has provided for our son in the areas of reading comprehension, phonics, spelling, and vocabulary. Our first goal for him was improvement in his ability to retell a story he had read. After only seven lessons, a reading assessment used by his public school showed definite improvement in this area. After two months of twice weekly lessons focusing on comprehension and vocabulary, we asked Carol to change the focus to phonics and spelling. The lessons Carol prepares are great! Our son's progress with phonograms is exactly what his mother and I were hoping for.

Back in 2013-2014, when I was a senior at Suffolk University in Boston, MA, Carol tutored me during both semesters. During each semester we worked on two courses that I was having a bit of trouble in, but were a requirement for graduation. Carol and I worked together successfully, and I graduated in Spring 2014. I understand that, because of Covid, Carol is now tutoring remotely through Zoom. Even though she and I worked side by side in my family home, I feel confident that she will be able to help other students to succeed in reaching their goals. She has kept up her teaching certification (through 2024), and I'm sure that she still puts all of her effort and expertise into making sure that the student understands what is being taught. I would highly recommend Carol for your tutoring needs. She was always accommodating with my hectic college schedule.
I am writing to recommend Carol Donovan as tutor for elementary students. I am the Title 1 Coordinator for Canton Public Schools in Canton, MA. Mrs. Donovan was hired as a Title I Reading Tutor for the Dean S. Luce Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year. From October through mid-March, Carol worked with students in grades one through five, in groups of four. Carol is very organized and committed to providing the very best support for her students. When school was closed in March due to Covid, tutors suddenly needed to prepare to support students in a remote environment. Carol immediately embraced training for remote teaching and planned engaging, well-paced and effective lessons, targeted to her students' needs. When tutors were asked to notify parents that tutoring would end in June 2020, one parent of Carol's students reached out to express her disappointment: "I am sad that [my daughter] has only a few more sessions with you. Working with you in just this short time I have seen such an improvement....Thank you so much for working with her. You are very much appreciated!" In a survey sent to all parents, one parent reflected: "Mrs. Donovan's one on one support during March 13 closure was a game changer for my daughter." Unfortunately, Carol was unable to return to our school this year, as she is in a high risk group due to her age. I have seen personally Carol's effectiveness as a tutor both online and in person, and highly recommend her as a tutor to any student needing support!

I charge $60 per hour for remote lessons, but if a parent wants two hours in one session (I don't recommend a longer session for a student below grade six) I would reduce the fee to $50 per hour, or $100 for two hours. If a lesson is cancelled without 6 hours notice, I will charge a $25 inconvenience fee. If a student lives within 20 minutes of my home, or would prefer to meet at a nearby library, I would add only $5 per session for in-person tutoring.
