About Amanda
I've been working in universities since I was a student myself in 2008. Having lived in Japan for almost 5 years, I know that adjusting to a new style of education--be that a writing style or new language and culture--can be intimidating. To me, it's most important to figure out how to make education work for you, and work together to make the process more enjoyable.
From finishing an assignment that felt impossible to graduating and moving on to the next stage of life, I love being able to celebrate all levels of achievement with students. I think it's important to recognize each victory as well as celebrating what we can learn from our setbacks.
I have a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I've attended the TESOL conference every 2 years (with the exception of 2020 because of COVID-19).

I think it's very important to get to know the students' interests and goals. Once I know where they're going and what they like, I can start make connections during our time together to get more "buy-in" from them. After all, we're only going to be invested in something if it's important to us.
While the majority of my work has been with international students whose first language is not English, I have spent the last year working with native English speaking American students, from middle school through graduate school.
