About Norine

I'm a certified English Language Arts teacher (grades 6-12). I teach Princeton Review Guide test-taking tactics for the Reading and Writing portions of the SAT that are designed to help students read strategically and get more answers right. I also prep students for ACT.

The SAT test is filled with traps that are designed to trip students up. I enjoy teaching students how to recognize the traps so they can easily avoid them. In addition, the SAT reading test is a very fast-paced test with only 65 minutes alloted for 5 passages. I love teaching students time-saving strategies for reading only what they need to answer the questions while not wasting time reading what they don't.

I started as a substitute for Kelly Educational Staffing.

I'm a graduate of Oberlin College and I have a masters from New York University. I have a teaching certificate for English Language Arts for grades 6 through 12. I worked as a substitute teacher for a year, primarily at Dr. Phillips High School, prepping juniors and seniors for ACT and SAT tests. And I spent some time at Evans High School prepping seniors for SAT and FSA retakes.

About the lesson

I do an initial practice test to determine which type of test questions a student struggles with, then I set up a study program to master those question types.

I've worked with middle school and high school students in assorted subjects, but mainly in English Language Arts and intensive reading and ACT/SAT preparation.

I was helping an intensive reading class of seniors prep for the ACT reading test and one student kept saying that he was sure he was going to fail. So much of test-taking is a mental game, so I dug into my files and pulled out his practice tests. I'd only been subbing in his class for a short time, but it was long enough for him to have done four practice tests for me. He'd scored 100% on every test. I knelt down by his desk -- I always wear jeans in class so I can kneel down and be at eye-level with the kids. I told him very quietly (so I didn't make him the focus of attention of his classmates) that he'd aced every test he'd done for me, that he had this, that he needed to put his self-doubt on a shelf and just go into the test and get it done. When I saw him again, he said it'd been easier than he thought. A few weeks later, he came into class with a huge smile on his face, and gave me the biggest hug. He'd passed the test, and tested out of the class. Sometimes, all these kids need is the self-confidence to know they can do it.
