About
Education/Professional
My educational background includes a B.S. in Political Science of Natural Resources from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA (Finance) from San Francisco State. I was able to complete my MBA at night school. Therefore, I am sympathetic to students who have to balance the obligations of work and family.
Upon graduating from UC Berkeley, I held a number of jobs before working as an analyst/consultant at a health care consulting firm (some of the previous jobs included: substitute teacher, construction worker, technician on the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange). In general, I worked with Silicon Valley firms, Fortune 500 companies, Public Sector clients and Union Trust Funds to manage their health care costs, which were increasing in excess of 20%. While at this firm, I went back to school at night because I wanted to develop expertise to increase my prospects of obtaining a better job. I settled on an MBA in Finance because of an interest I have in this topic.
Getting this degree ended up being worth the sacrifices for both me and my family. I was able to start a carrier working in the finance departments of various health care organizations. This led to better pay and a more enriching work experience.
I have worked on multimillion dollar operating and capital projects.
Teaching Philosophy
During the 20 years that I have taught online and, on the ground, finance courses, I have been exposed to a wide range of student learning styles. As a result of those experiences, I have developed a teaching/tutoring philosophy that emphasizes adapting to the individual needs of each student. Some students are “numbers people” some are not.
In addition, teaching/tutoring is an organic exercise. It is one that you learn new ways to approach issues from listening to your students. What worked 10 years ago may not work today.
Fun Stuff
Ok, you should know I love zombie movies and books and graphic novels. Not for the gore, but because a really good zombie story is about how people adapt to their world being turned upside down. For some characters, it can destroy them, but for others, it allows them to grow into something new. I think of that as a good life lesson.
