About Ione

As a college student, I tutored my peers and it bought me a lot of pride to be able to raise their grades by several letters. For some, that meant the difference of making the Dean's List; for others, it meant being able pass the class they had been struggling with. Five years later, with a CPA license and years of experience working in the accounting field, I can bring a much more intuitive instruction that focuses on not just exactly what you need to know to pass the class, but also to understand the material, and build on your skills in the future.

My Approach:

My experience with tutoring includes my college peers and after college in accounting and finance. I have experience helping students to review the material to helping students who are struggling to pass the class.

As a tutor I focus on comprehension of fundamental concepts and practicing examples, as I believe this approach better helps students with longer term memorization and understanding.

Background:

I have a B.A. in Accounting from Flagler College and five years of experience working as an auditor and corporate accountant. Three of my five years included working as a Technical Accountant for a Fortune 500 company, so I have plenty of experience interpreting the actual accounting guidance for GAAP and IFRS, as well as industry-specific accounting guidance. As a part of my role as a technical accountant, I was part of a team that interpreted and implemented the newest accounting standards at my company. I am also a licensed CPA in Virginia.

I like to focus on helping my students get a working knowledge of the topic so that they can pass the test and feel comfortable going outside the classroom to talk about what they have learned. I believe this kind of approach sets students up for success outside of the classroom, as well as in school. If you are looking for a tutor who will help you engage and really understand the material, rather than just memorize for the test, we would be a great match. I love seeing the "ah ha!" lightbulb moment when my students connect with the material. When this happens, I can tell they don't just know or memorize the material, it also makes sense to them. I know at this point it doesn't just stick for the test, but it sticks for the long term and will allow them to build on their skills.

I started tutoring accounting students while I was in college as a way to help my peers to understand the materials that they were struggling in the classes we were taking. I continued tutoring after college and mentored/taught younger staff and interns while working as an auditor at EY.

I'm a licensed CPA in Virginia and I have 5 years of experience working in the industry. I've also tutored students in accounting while I was in college and after college while I was working as an auditor.

About the lesson

I'd like to talk to you to see what topics are you are struggling with and what are your goals for the tutoring sessions. I'd like to set up a schedule of tutoring sessions and see what materials the student has for the class or test prep. Since I'm not a replacement for a teacher, I can help the student with reviewing and better understanding the topics they are struggling with so that I can better help them pass the class or test. As such, I'd like to set up a communication plan for the student to send me the topics and materials that they want to review a couple days before the tutoring session. This will give me the opportunity to prepare a tutoring session plan so that you can get the most out of each tutoring session.

I've worked with college students and adult learners, but I can work with high school students studying accounting as well.

Since I'm not a replacement for a school/university teacher, I can help the student with reviewing and better understanding the topics they are struggling with so that I can better help them pass the class or test. A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'd like the student to think through their goals for the session and describe the class or test they are studying for. I'd also like for them to outline the topics or coursework they are struggling with and would like to focus on. I'd also like them to talk to me about what type of learner they are. Since I focus on helping them with the materials they are struggling with, I'd like them to take an inventory of the materials they are working with and mark/communicate which materials they would like me to build lesson plans around.

Details

My standard price is $60 per session for online and $80 for in person. These prices reflect the time spent in the tutoring session, the time I use to prepare tutoring session plans before each session (typically about a hour of prep for each hour of a session), and travel to the student's location if in-person tutoring is requested.
