About Emily

I have been playing flute for over 30 years, and have a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from the Hartt School. My performance career has included orchestral, chamber music, and solo performance, but teaching is my primary focus and source of inspiration.

I really enjoy getting to know each individual student and working as their coach and learning partner. To me, this means prioritizing the student's interests and helping them achieve their own goals. My role as a music teacher is to understand the your musical journey and help map it out with fun and challenging musical adventures along the way. I like to keep lessons light in mood, casual and conversational, but also focused and engaging.

My own background is primarily in classical music, but I love exploring other styles of music with my students as well. I enjoy working with students all the way from beginners through advanced/pre-professional musicians. I welcome students ages 5 through adult.

The greatest joy for me as a teacher is watching the students' growth and learning. I strive to be the support system, resource, and knowledge base, while letting the student drive their own progress and follow their musical interests.

I started teaching (at a greatly reduced rate!) when I was 16, in order to pay for my own flute lessons. I have continued since then, with flute instruction being my primary career for almost 25 years now.

I have a degree in flute performance from The Hartt School, and decades of teaching experience. I also regularly participate in continuing education through workshops and masterclasses for pedagogy and performance.

About the lesson

In the first lesson, I like to get a sense of what the student has already learned, if anything, and what their goals are. Then, I'll usually give some short-term assignments while we delve into the details over the next few weeks, and after that we'll look at some long-term music to learn.

I have worked with students from ages 5 through adult, at all ages and ability levels, absolute beginner to advanced, college prep/pre professional and "I haven't touched the flute in decades" adult re-beginners.
