About Angelo

My mix of immersion learning and formal tutoring give me an excellent ability to teach you the language as it's actually spoken. I spent 3 years in a French speaking country, being tutored 4 times a week by native speakers, and using what I learned daily. I understand and can teach the formal language but I can also give insight into more natural and native ways of speaking having used it so throughly myself. I have a year and a half of experience tutoring engineering students at New Mexico State University.

I love helping students understand difficult concepts! And I especially love helping them understand French! Learning a language is more than just gaining new vocabulary and grammar, it's learning a new culture and way of thinking. I love opening up this brand new world to any and all who desire to learn! I can help you understand French vocabulary and grammar to help you meet your academic goals and hopefully give you a love for the language and people who speak it along the way.

I started tutoring in college while I was an engineering student. I realized that I enjoyed passing my knowledge on to other students and loved seeing the light of understanding dawn on their faces. I then worked with a missions organization overseas for ~5 years (where I learned French) and was daily passing on knowledge to students and helping them understand Biblical concepts.

I formally tutored engineering students at New Mexico State University for 1.5 years. I was taught many techniques for helping students to understand how to approach a problem, not just how to get the right answers. In terms of language, I have 3 years of experience living in a francaphone (French speaking) country (Côte d'Ivoire) and have been speaking French for a little over 6 years. I was tutored daily for the first year I spent in Côte d'Ivoire and 4-5 times a week the last two years. I have informally but professionally been evaluated to have a B2 speaking level and B1.2 writing level by the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). I have not been formally tested or earned this level of language certification but received a professional evaluation from a French language school for placement in their language program. If time and life permits I hope to gain a formal certification someday!

I like to get to know a student first...their lives and background help me to connect with them and make tutoring much more casual and friendly. I then like to get an idea of what their base is in regards to subject matter. Do they understand certain basic concepts? Are there gaps in their knowledge? These kinds of things are important to know when beginning to tutor a new student. I also like to see what sort of effort the student has made to understand a difficult concept. If someone hasn't put in much effort, it's possible the concept is merely one good study session away from being well understood.

I have worked with mostly college students during my time tutoring or teaching. Some of that time was spent teaching students who didn't speak any English. I have spent some time teaching middle aged adults as well! I have worked with high school students but not as frequently.

I would recommend to students that they find someone who has a lot of experience actually speaking French (or any language, for that matter). It is one thing to learn a language's vocabulary and grammar but it is another thing entirely to use it. I have seen far too many people claim an ability to speak French because of 4 years of high school French only to be scared speechless in the face of actual spoken French. Find someone with whom you can practice speaking while learning the basics and who understands the difficulties of learning via immersion!

I recently had a son and am very grateful to have him in my life now. It was such a joy to see him and my wife the moment he was born. It was a wonderful day and I'm thankful for him and my family.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should think through why they want to learn what they're learning because motivation is huge in keeping you going when things get tough. I believe students should also ask themselves where they're having trouble or when in their study they started experiencing difficulty. If they can verbalize to a teacher what it is they don't understand, it can help us know where exactly to start!
