About Richard

As a former Assistant Professor of French and Instructor of English, I am an expert in both French and English grammar. This dual expertise allows me to help English speakers relate to French grammar.

I lived and studied in France for 2.5 years. I attended the French Air Force Academy for a semester, and I hold degrees from the French Political Science Institute in Paris, as well as an MA in French from Middlebury College's Parisian campus.

My wife was born in France, so I am able to maintain my French fluency on a daily basis.

My primary job is leadership education and training, and I also do French tutoring to keep my hand in my true passion - the French language and culture!

"La belle langue de Molière" (the beautiful language of Molière - French) was music to my ears the first time I heard it, and all things French have entranced me ever since!

Helping others to better understand and appreciate French language and culture is food for my soul.

Beginner, intermediate, of advanced - I enjoy working with all levels of students. My goal is to see progress in my students, no matter from where they start.

After receiving my MA in French, I began teaching adult education beginner French classes. I also did some private tutoring as a side gig. My first fulltime French teaching position was as an Instructor of French at the USAF Academy.

Performed a three month internship in the political military affairs office of the US Embassy, Paris, France

My wife was born and raised in France, so I maintain fluency on a daily basis

About the lesson

For all of my students, I perform a 15-20 minute interview to discover the student's experience with French language and culture, as well as language proficiency discussion. If possible, I conduct the interview in French. But for students new to French, I conduct the interview in English, and we go from there!

I have worked with high school and college students, as well as adults of all ages.

Patience and a thorough of understanding of both French and English grammar. A French tutor who cannot relate French grammatical concepts to English grammar is at a handicap, because adult learners of Foreign languages need to understand how their own language's grammar relates to the foreign language, especially when it comes to verb tenses and their usage.

On the 15th of July, 2018, I fortunate enough to be in France with my wife. We went to a local cafe and watched the French win the World Cup in soccer - a truly memorable event!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What are your goals for the tutoring session? Studying for a test? Improving overall language proficiency? Help with homework? Letting the tutor know the goal of the session(s) allows him/her to better adapt the flow of the tutoring session to the student's needs.
