About Gia

I have loved language since before I can remember, and the power of words to change lives and broaden horizons never ceases to astound me. Through my tutoring, I seek to show students that yes, things like English and writing and reading are not only useful, but they can be (wait for it...) fun! The ability to read and communicate effectively is completely and totally necessary, even in today's digital age, so a solid understanding of how language works is a valuable skill.

I've been pursuing language acquisition beyond my native language for about eight years now, starting French courses and later, German courses. I've aided fellow students who had questions concerning our English, French, and German assignments, and was thankfully able to help them better understand what was being asked of them by the instructor.

I've retained a 4.0 GPA since before middle school. I'm also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the National Honor Society, and Société Honoraire de Francais (French Honor Society). I've studied French for eight years, German for two years, and English all my life, as it is my native language. I was fortunate enough to be awarded my high school's departmental award for World Language, as well as a scholarship from the local Rotary Club. I've also won two separate writing contests at my local college, placing twice in the first contest and once in the second.

I feel as if I've always been in a sort of teaching position, as I was a student other students would turn to with questions or concerns about our homework. I've also been Concert Mistress for two orchestras, so I've learned a thing or two about knowing your subject so that you can lead others to success. I've given one-on-one mentoring sessions at my church, as well as teaching groups of children at our yearly Vacation Bible School programs.

I'm currently in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in English (with an emphasis in creative writing), as well as continued pursuit in learning foreign languages. I feel confident in speaking French, and I can also understand conversational German. (I'm also newly picking up Russian.) I feast on English and foreign languages, these are such valuable skills, even if it seems that technology is taking over. I have a passion for what I'm seeking to teach, and it's one of my ultimate goals in tutoring that I might show a student that they can enjoy reading, writing, language, etc. It can be fun, I promise!

About the lesson

Firstly, I'm a firm believer in the idea that students best succeed in a personalized environment. By this I mean the material should be as non-cookie-cutter as possible, because every student learns differently. Because I think this way, I like to get to know the student and ask lots of questions so that I can best understand how they prefer to learn and what has worked for them in the past. Then, I present the material in a way that I think will be most comprehensible to them. I love questions and trying out different methods to see what works for you.

I've taught children between the ages of 7-14, as well as a couple teenagers, at least so far as one-on-one sessions. I've also provided homework help and/or advice as Concert Mistress to high school groups upwards of 5+ students.

I would tell the student to take chances: go for the teacher with unconventional teaching methods. If you already don't much care for a subject, having an instructor who goes by a strict rulebook is likely not going to make that subject more enjoyable or comprehensible for you. Do your best to find a teacher who is willing to meet you where you are in your understanding of that course, and who wants to keep an open dialogue to always make sure that you're getting the most of the lessons. Don't short-change yourself!

Every year, my church has several community outreach programs, and the closest one to today's date is the Eggstravaganza, our annual Easter celebration day. Whenever I volunteer for it, I'm always struck by the hundreds of different faces, families, and lifestyles that come through the doors. For some children, our event could be the only instance during their day that they're treated with absolute attention or care, and that always puts me in the right mindset of "Be all here for these children." I'm very fond of the event, it's a great way to show God's unconditional love and the kiddos get such a kick out of it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would say, consider why you might not be understanding something. Is it because you haven't been presented with the information prior to right now, or is it because you don't understand something fundamental about said information? Are you unable to focus on your lesson because you had a bad day, or because you don't understand what the instructor is asking of you and so your brain is "shutting down" on you? Always be asking yourself "why" and keeping the conversation open and honest with your instructor so that they can help you get to the root of the problem and hopefully provide a solution.

Details

I prefer to start English tutoring at a rate of $16/hr, French or German tutoring at a rate of $22/hr. These might be subject to change if I'm required to drive a greater distance to meet the student, but that would be spoken about with the client long beforehand.
