About McKenzie

At Open Doors Accent Modification, I believe that with my training and experience and your hard work, we can reduce the impact of your accent on your ability to be understood in your daily life. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2018 with a Bachelors in Linguistics with a second major in Communication studies and a minor in Speech and Hearing Sciences. After gaining 2 years of accent modification volunteer experience through the Chapel Hill ESL program, I began working on my Masters in Speech Langauge Pathology in Fall 2018, from which I will graduate in May 2020. I taught an accent modification course as a student for the Spring of 2019, in a group and individual setting. I now have 3.5 year experience in accent modification and related services, and love working with the most dedicated populattion of students out there! Let me work with you on your intelligiblity and communication, and let's see what doors we can open together!

"Do you know what a foreign accent is? It's a sign of bravery."-Amy Chua. I believe this is absolutely true. I have made a living of studying language and communication, and nobody is braver than those who throw themselves into a community of speakers of a foreign language. There is no reason for these hard working individuals to figure it out all on their own! When you are learning English, you take classes, and when you are learning pronunciation an grammar closer to a native English speaker, you can take my class. I love seeing the opportunities for communication and community engagement, and even employment opportunity that can come from my work in accent modification!

About the lesson

Understanding your goals from your time in accent modification is extremely important to me. That is why I tend to begin the first 1-2 sessions with an interview and questionnaire to best understand your personal goals, as well as an in-depth evaluation of your oral English to assess your baseline skills. From here we can work together to decide the length and frequency of sessions best to work on your individualized goals.
