About Dana

Hi! I obtained a Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 2008 and I specialize in accent modification/accent reduction, as well as public speaking, conversational speech, and articulation. I am also open to assisting individuals with English communication. I currently hold a certificate of completion for "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" with TEFL.org. I am also a Compton Certified "Pronouncing English as a Second Language" instructor, by the Institute of Language and Phonology.

I enjoy teaching people new skills and watching them master new sounds, as well as teaching them new ways to improve their communication at home, in school, in their work environment, or in their local community.

I started teaching my youngest cousin who had a learning disorder due to premature birth. I enjoyed teaching him PreK language and math skills. I decided at a young age to go into the field of Speech & Hearing Sciences. Ever since graduating with this degree, the type of clients I enjoy working with most are 16+ to older adults who have a desire to improve their word usage, sounds, grammar, fluency, rate, and the way they convey information to others.

I have a Batchelor of Science and a Masters as a Speech-Language-Pathologist. I graduated in 2008 and hold my CCC/SLP certification. I have extensive experience with all ages and etiologies, in a variety of settings -hospitals, outpatient facilities, nursing homes, long-term-acute care centers, as well as babysitting and tutoring services.

About the lesson

First steps in working with a new student would be obtaining their full name, date of birth, history/country of origin, contact information, and their schedule for their availability. We would likely have a phone conversation and discuss client goals. Then schedule an initial meeting or a zoom meeting.

I've worked with students on Reading/Writing/Grammar/Math and word problems, as well as verbal and written fluency, handwriting, English concepts, spelling, and articulation, to name a few.

My advice to a student is to realize the power of elasticity that your brain has. Our brains are capable of growing in the specific areas that we repeatedly practice skills. The phrase "practice makes perfect" holds quite a bit of truth. You can improve on anything you set your mind to as long as you are consistent!

I'm fond of teaching accent reduction recently. This is just the most interesting concept and skill set that I have learned in my entire career.
