About Matt

My teaching style and curriculum is created around the student. Every student not only learns a certain way, but also come to lessons with widely varied goals and experience. My goal is to make learning music fun while simultaneously learning important fundamental concepts that will impact the students playing for years to come.

I put a lot of emphasis within lessons towards learning songs of the students choosing, and then using that song as a reference to music theory concepts and technique. If a student doesn't know what songs they like or even the style of music they like, I aim to help them find what that is. If there is no written material for a given song online, I see it as a challenge to the student to try and learn or transcribe a song by ear. At the end of the day, all these scales, exercises, riffs, and chord progressions lead to one thing - a song. Learning to play full songs is one of the most important things you can do while learning an instrument, in my opinion. From there, songs can be used to reinforce music theory concepts and insight to composition.

When it comes to older students who own personal computers, another area of emphasis within my teaching is self-recording and music production. In this modern age, I believe every musican should know how to properly record and produce their own music. When I started out, production was extremely overwhelming and I wished I had a private instructor to teach me. I aim to bridge the technical gap for musicians, and help them realize how possible it is to produce music even from a laptop in a bedroom.

There is nothing more rewarding to me than helping other people learn and discover passion for music. I love passing on the knowledge and experience I've accumulated to younger generations and even older generations rediscovering their love for music. Music is everything to me, and I believe it's my responsibility to teach and express my own passion to other people interested in music.

I began by taking an "intro to private music teaching" course in college. Within that class, I actually had the opportunity to teach a lesson to a young student, and thats where I found my love of teaching.

After college I applied to local music schools and began building up my student load, starting with a handful and eventually growing to over 25 students a week.

I have been a musician my whole life. My first instrument was piano and I took lessons as a child from ages 5-12. As I matured so did my musical interests, and I became a huge rock music lover expanding my vocabulary of instruments to both electric guitar and drum set. I then I continued to take lessons on both instruments until going to college.

I studied at the University of Colorado Denver, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Music. During my time there, I partook in several ensembles and bands of various musical styles while also receiving private instruction from head faculty.

After graduation, I started pursuing my career in teaching music which I have been doing for 3 years now. I currently teach at a privately owned music studio in Broomfield Colorado, with anywhere between 20-30 students per week. I also coach youth rock bands with ages anywhere between 10-18, with groups between 4-6 kids on varying rock instruments. Within bands I teach students how to learn cover songs, write original songs, and perform on stage with a live show taking place at the end of each band session.

About the lesson

Depends on the students background, however with almost every student I'll start by finding out the students favorite styles of music, artist/bands, and ultimately the goals they have for themselves on guitar. Then based on that information, I design a curriculum around their interests that take the student from point A to B. Everyone sees themselves playing guitar differently. Not everyone wants to finger pick, not everyone wants to shred metal guitar, and not everyone wants to learn music theory. If a student is unsure of music they like or don't have any personal goals (complete beginner) I see it as my job to help them discover their own music interests, and establish the most essential guitar techniques that they can use for years to come.

I have worked with all types of ages and students from 5 year olds to 50 year olds and everything in between, including all major styles of music. I've also taught and worked with several different children on the autism spectrum.

My advice to students looking to hire a teacher like me: be prepared to accept the fact that you have to put the work in and practice your instrument. I can help bring you to a very high skill level, but the rate of learning will often depend on how much practice time is spent at home. 30 minutes a week is frankly not enough to get good at much things, and especially not guitar. Be prepared to practice and see your own improvements through the practice routines that I assign.

3. Do you want to play songs? Do you want to learn how to improvise? Do you want to learn how to shred solos? Think about what you want to be as a guitarist.

My lesson pricing is very standard, $25 for a half hour, and $45 for a full hour. You get a 5 dollar discount for signing up with hour lessons.

I offer 15 minute FREE trial lessons to everyone. That way we can meet face to face and have a discussion about goals and student interests together.

I have negotiated 45 minute lessons in the past, so if thats something you're interested in reach out to me and we can set something up.
