About Magus

As a trained strategic intervention coach, I can identify your strongest learning patterns and help you to move forward in your progress. My specialty is helping get over those stubborn, "stuck" places and into a place of being able to see what to do, know how to do it and feel confident going through the steps.

Also steeped in martial arts and zen philosophy, I emphasize calm, relaxed playing and breathing to help you fully enjoy what you play. Why play something "correct", if you're still busy beating yourself up the whole time? Learn with me how to get joy from your music.

I teach everything you'll need, We'll teach you your favorite songs and break them down in terms of simple, music theory (addvanced if you're interested).

I just jumped in about 15 years ago, put up flyers and did word of mouth. I just needed to make extra money and people said I was good at it, so I went deeper into it.

I attended UNCW as a jazz performance major and was a member of Cape Fear's jazz ensemble, each year that I attended there.

I've also been playing professionally, both solo and in various bands for about 20 + years.

About the lesson

I first assess where they are at and go over the basics. I never assume that the student has been taught correctly about rudiments, I ask them to demonstrate them for me.

I then teach them something new and assign a clear, daily homework/practice regimen. The next lesson will quickly go over the work of the previous week and on to new material.

All ages, most different genres of music, some students with developmental issues. My favorite students to work with more advanced students, teens and adults. However, I'm completely comfortable with all types of students.

If your questions are not being answered in ways that make sense, keep looking for a different teacher.

If the teacher only demonstrates and doesn't walk you through playing everything yourself, keep looking for a different teacher.

If you are not treated respectfully, keep looking for a different teacher.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One of the biggest problems I've encountered is beginner students or the parents of beginners, buying really inferior instruments that cause the student to be really frustrated.

You can get a great beginner guitar for $70-150 but you have to know what to look for and what to avoid. By all means, talk to me before making a purchase. It will save you a lot of time and money.
