About Margaret
Hi Friends,
Thanks for viewing my profile! I am a professional harpist with a Bachelor of Harp degree from Juilliard, and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Since finishing school, I've worked as a harpist performing a range of genres in New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Washington DC, New Jersey, Seattle, New Hampshire, and now, Texas. My training is in classical harp, but I spend a lot of time playing recording jazz and pop music as well. Being a versatile musician is important both for musical growth and development, and also for diverse career opportunities.
Teaching harp lessons is one of my favorite things; it's extremely rewarding to notice expansion in a student's skillset and practical knowledge. My harp teachers at Juilliard and Yale are very important to me, and I frequently relay their sentiments to my students. I always try to be aware of my students' interests and other activities/obligations, and tailor a lesson plan based on how much time they are able to devote to practicing, what repertoire would develop their technique and musical abilities, and, of course, what repertoire interests and appeals to them. I also discuss music theory and tips and tricks for orchestra, chamber music, and other performance opportunities at length in my lessons. I'm comfortable with concert, competition, and audition prep, and apply my experience in all of those areas.

I began teaching shortly after graduating from Juilliard and beginning grad school; my harp teacher at Yale referred several students to me. We worked on solo rep for competitions, recitals, and building repertoire in general, chamber, and orchestral music.

I make sure to create a custom lesson plan, tailored to each individual student's level and learning style. I share my knowledge from my own education in music school, as well as practical advice from on the job, musician experience in orchestras, chamber music settings, recitals, competitions, and other collaborative projects.
All types! Ages 5 to 79, of all levels and a range of learning styles.
Have a lesson! Feel free to take a trial lesson with a teacher whose information interests you. It is important that you feel comfortable and clearly understand what your teacher is communicating to you. Chemistry with your teacher can have a major impact on how quickly and successfully you make progress, so take your time and don't feel bad if the first teacher you try isn't the best fit for you.
I was so thrilled when one of my students, Kate, who is 14, won the harp division of her regional solo competition. We worked very hard on the repertoire, especially musicality and phrasing.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Personally, I am happy to hear whatever my students would like to share to help me understand what will be helpful to them and their learning process. The priority is our progress, and our discussions, ideally, should help us create the most comfortable and productive learning and working environment that we can.
