About Alison
When we learn to understand the ways that history and society impact and reflect aspects of our own lived experiences, we can move beyond memorization to real engagement and understanding. Social Studies and History were always my favorite subjects. I received a 4 on the AP U.S. History exam in high school, and a 5 on the AP European Exam. I have a Master of Arts in Sociology of Race and Ethnicity and Sociology of Education, as well as a PhD (ABD) in the same areas. I've taught undergraduate Sociology courses in Social Theory, Reseach Methods, Dynamics of Prejudice, Deviance, and Social Control. I also have over ten years of experience teaching a range of topics to youth and adults in community based settings. I am certified to teach several evidence-based programs, including Safe Dates, Community Voices, Making Proud Choices, Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment, and Strengthening Families. I have several years of experience working with students with atypical learning profiles and those who have experienced trauma.History and social studies/sociology are my passion, and learning them should be fun and relevant to your own life.
