About Ruth
At VS Equine, we offer a comprehensive lesson and training program that emphasizes safe and enjoyable trail riding and sound horsemanship from the ground up. We have been in business for over 30 years and have years of experience in many different disciplines as well as national and international competition. In current years our focus is sharing our knowledge and love of horses as well as making each student become the best horseman or horsewoman they can, learning how to ride balanced and effectively communicating with any horse. Any breed or discipline is welcome and we teach any level starting as young as 5 and can help you fulfill your dreams and goals.

Ruth Van Sweden-Altes has been riding throughout her lifetime and began training in 1988. During her career, she has competed at the state, regional and national level. She has ridden and trained horses and riders to 12 World Championships and 6 Reserve World Championships at Quarter Horse, Palomino, Buckskin and Morgan World Championship Shows. She and her students have shown sucessfully in Reining, Working Cowhorse, Trail, Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Western Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Hack, Working Hunter and Jumping. Ruth has been teaching Western Riding clinics in Europe since 1995 and has served as a horse show judge in Texas, New Mexico, and California. Ruth holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from New Mexico State University, where her focus was a strong veterinary background. She managed a Quarter Horse Breeding program for 15 years. Ruth offers a diverse and varied training program in both English and Western disciplines and has run many youth summer horsemanship camps. She has carried her knowlege and experience out onto the trail and into the wilderness, leading packing, outfitting and trail riding excursions since 1992. Ruth was also the Offical trainer for the San Francisco Mounted Patrol Unit for 3 years.

We first want to do a verbal evaluation of our students goals and then will try and place them in the appropriate program for their level. When accepting new horses in training, we also do a thorough interview process with the owner of the horse to determine, exactly where the horse is at in the training, whether there are any issues that need addressing and most importantly what the horse will be used/trained for and what the owner's goals are for their horse.
