About Tom
I play 20+ instruments. I teach pretty much all styles: pop, blues, jazz, folk, country, rock, and classical, and also music theory, composition and improvisation, using whatever techniques work best for the learner.
Lessons are custom-designed for students – including consideration of material, skill level, age, and experience, and are focused on what they want to do musically.
Together we find the best pace at which to cover the material and can tweak that from time to time to make sure the student always experiences some forward progress, but never feels overwhelmed. The youngest student I have taught with this method was 4 years old, and the oldest was 87. They all weem to enjoy the process.
We continue to perfect the way we communicate musical skills, keeping the tone of the lessons positive, cheerful and exciting.
At some point, students realize that their progress depends on my coaching and how earnestly they are practicing. In a sense, their progress is in their own hands. It seems that when they make a new musical 'breakthrough' a light goes on and their eyes sparkle. They are so happy when they 'get it' and can go on to the next level, and it makes me happy to see...
