About Joseph

Get expert help in understanding jazz from someone who knows the academic side (PhD in Composition) and the practical side (25+ years jazz pianist in combos, big band and solo gigs). I can help levels from absolute beginner through advanced musicians.

The thing that keeps me energized about lessons is how people understand things in different ways. By breaking down ideas and techniques, into bite size pieces so that someone else can get it, I always come away with a deeper understanding of it myself.

I have doctoratal degree in music composition from the University of Oklahoma and am Associate Professor of Music at Grove City College, where I teach theory, composition and jazz. I studied jazz arranging at the Mannes Scholl of Music, and have been a professional piano player for over 25 years.

About the lesson

The first step is to discuss what you want to learn, or get better at. Part of that discussion is your music background: how long you've been playing, who you studied with, what music you like, and so on. Then I can suggest one or more paths to get you to your goals. A typical lesson includes going over previous work to see what progress you've made and making any corrections; learning some new technique or method; doing some practice exercises to make sure you understand the lesson; and setting goals for the next lesson.
