About Samantha

I give the students a lot of freedom in determining their lesson experience. I want to make sure that each student reaches their individual goals, whether you are serious about music or want to improve a hobby. Music has always been a passion of mine, and I love sharing it with all kinds of students, not just serious ones.

I love inspiring my students to create beautiful music and have fun with their art. I especially love motivating my students to become the best versions of themselves by allowing them to infuse their own personality into their music.

I started teaching at Wunderlich Intermediate School during my junior year of college, where I began teaching beginner clarinet players. I loved getting new students excited about music, and helping them have fun while they learn!

I have a Bachelor's in Clarinet Performance from the University of Houston, and I have experience performing in a variety of ensembles. I performed with the Brevard Center Orchestra, Sinfonia, and Opera Orchestra, as well as the Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra. I have also been a member of the Houston Youth Symphony, the Woodlands Concert Band, and was an active band member in high school. Some of my most notable works as principal clarinet include Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, Smetana’s Má Vlast, Respighi’s Fontane di Roma, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. I have also performed in many solo recitals and competitions, most recently placing as a semi-finalist in the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition, becoming a prize winner at the Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Academy, and securing elite spots in Master's programs across the country, including Eastman, Carnegie Mellon, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and The Glenn Gould School.

About the lesson

I love getting to know my new students and their current goals with private lessons. I want to make sure that I help each student get what they want out of their lessons, and I often cater my teaching to ensure I meet each student's needs. Because of this, there is usually a bit of discussion before playing. I usually have my students play some notes or maybe even a scale to gauge their ability level, then go from there. If the student is a complete beginner, our first lesson will focus on creating a sound out of the clarinet and learning a few notes.

I have worked with both beginner and advanced players. I moved to The Woodlands College Park High School my senior year of college, where I helped students advance in the TMEA All-State competition, as well as advance ensembles in their band class. I love showing my students how much they can succeed with just a bit of effort and a lot of passion!

Really think about why you want to take private lessons and what you want to get out of it. Do you need help motivating yourself to practice? Do you need help progressing in an efficient way? Do you want to improve your hobby or are you hoping to make music a career? Also think about the type of instruction you think works best for you - do you need someone more critical? Or more motivational? Do you want someone more friendly or strictly professional? All of these things will help you determine what teacher will work best for you!

I performed most recently at the Braeswood Towers Retirement Home as a part of the St. Anne Salon Series. To keep everyone safe during the pandemic, I had to perform outside (in the Texas heat!), while all the residents sat six feet apart in front of the entrance. Although the set-up was lackluster, all of the residents were excited to see each other again and thoroughly enjoyed hearing live music for the first time in months. I was so happy to perform for them and bring them together, something they hadn't done in a long time. It really reminded me that music does unite everyone.
