About Kathryn

Hi everyone! My name is Katie and I’m a Spanish/English Teacher at Fusion Academy Malvern. I have a passion for teaching, language, and creating a safe and fun environment for learning! I graduated from Saint Joseph’s University in 2016 with a BA in Spanish, Linguistics, and Latin American Studies. I am also TESOL/TEFL/TESL certified. I lived and studied in Spain for six months while I tutored Spanish high school students in English for a semester. I have also studied in Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico. I was part of the Puentes de Salud volunteer program in Philadelphia where I assisted elementary level students with their homework as their parents were not fluent in English. I am happy to be a tutor to anyone who needs a little extra help or who just wants to learn for fun! Message me for more information.

I love sharing what I have learned with others who want to learn, as well. Even if a student isn't passionate about the subject like I am, if I am able to make them think twice about a stereotype or misconception regarding language, culture, society, etc then I believe it has been a successful lesson. I love being able to create a safe space for students to question and doubt and explore their own interests and curiorities while also learning about themselves and how they learn and what they need from me as their teacher. I believe learning never stops, and though I am now not the student, I always learn so much from those I teach.

My family is full of educators and I have also had an interest and curiosity as to how they run their classrooms, create creative and innovative lesson plans, and the relationships they build. I found my niche in college as I explored tutoring opportunities and took advantage of language-teaching courses offered. I really connected with wanting to share my passions with others as well as the desire to become the best teacher I can be for these students. Students deserve the best educator no matter the circumstance of the school or the common core standards.

I graduated from Saint Joseph's University with a BA in Spanish, Linguistics, and Latin American Studies. I also received a TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification from Oxford Seminars. I have tutored high school level students in English while studying abroad in Spain, I have tutored college students in Spanish, and I have assisted elementary school students with homework in the after school program associated with Puentes de Salud in Philadelphia. I have also accepted a position as a Spanish/English Teacher at Fusion Academy Malvern in July of 2018. I taught for two years at Gimnasio La Montaña in Colombia, and returned in 2021 to continue teaching at Fusion Academy Malvern.

About the lesson

I always want to get to know the student before diving right into the material. It's important to know what their interests are to incorporate those into the learning so the student is engaged and even having fun! I also like to get a sense of what kind of learner the student is (visual, audible, kinestetic) so I can better create lesson plans for that student. It is also an opportunity to establish trust and to show the student that I am not here to throw material at them, but rather, that I care and I will do my best to help them enjoy the process.

I have worked with students who are on a fast-track and move more quickly than their classmates through the material. I have also worked with students who need a bit more time, more practice and more creative activities to fully grasp the lesson and feel confident in moving forward. I've worked with students on the spectrum, those with adhd, and those who struggle with emotional regulation. Lastly, I have worked with students who are dealing with more personal issues that may affect how they feel in the classroom or about school.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would advise the students to reflect on how they best learn. Think about some of their favorite teachers or teachers from whom they feel they have learned the most and try to think of why. What activities do you enjoy most? What helps you to understand material the most? Do you find yourself zoning out during movies, or powerpoints, or puzzles? This will help the student be able to decide which teacher may be the best fit for them.

Details

My starting rate is $60 an hour. This is based off of the lower end of the standard language tutor rates. My hours are flexible, as well.
