About Katelyn

I've been a teaching artist for 2 years working in private institutions and non for profits. I've helped a lot of students develop their personal artistic voices, and have guided many of them through the process of creating portfolios for art high schools and art school colleges.

I started teaching art after getting my BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan. Upon graduating I got my first teaching job and began assisting high schoolers from all around the world in a competitive pre college summer program at SVA. During the program I'd have students start and finish a new image with a new concept everyday. By the end we assembled our images together to create an accordian book/portfolio. This 8-14 page book with lino cut covers and end pages would get installed into a group exhibition by the end of the program. Professors and i would then award outstanding achievments to individuals in our program with 3 college credits.

Since doing the pre college summer programs I've worked as a teaching artist through the Brooklyn College Community Partnership. Because of Brooklyn College's relationship with their psychology department (and committment to community enagegment and youth empowerment) I get to work with developmental psychologists. They conduct research as I work with the youth to help students learn not only new skills and how to make meaningful things, but they also learn about themselves.

Outside of teaching I'm also an artist, and I'll be starting my Fine Art MFA at Hunter College. I primarily paint and draw. If you want to peep my work here's my website: Katelynmong.com

As a teaching artist I enjoy seeing progress and growth. That’s really rewarding.

I was invited to assist in the SVA Pre College Summer Program. I worked with high schoolers from all over the US and the world. It was so fun and meaningful.

I studied at the School of Visual Arts graduating with my BFA in 2016. I soon start my MFA at Hunter College with an emphasis in painting.

About the lesson

I like to gage where they are at. I can get to know a new student well through giving them the task to draw from observation. Starting off with a still life where they get to choose what objects they want to work with.

After giving them some time and helping them through the drawing I learn so much about what they know and what they don't know. This lets me know, based on the individual's needs, where we can start!

I've worked with almost every type of student from different mental/psychological needs, to different socio economic classes, various demographics, students with art backgrounds and students with no artistic foundations, students from 3rd grade to high school to elders, students who are male or female or gender non coforming, and so forth. I've been around a lot of different people, and it's all about finding what they like and adjusting to how they learn.

It's a simple truism: practice makes perfect and painting is all about making mistakes and learning how to fix them. It's not about making anything that's good or bad because art is neither.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Maybe make a few things before hand to see where your interests/skills are. Seeing work you've done previously can be helpful in addressing what your visual needs are.

Standard pricing would be $50/hour students would have to purchase certain supplies for themselves. Depending on what they want to learn (drawing/painting/printmaking/collage) I'd create a specific supply list.
