About Alan

I grew up in an artistic household with my father being a full-time artist. I witnessed his journey from small town arts and crafts shows to major museum exhibitions and someone of national recognition. I'm now a full-time artist myself, and experiencing this same journey, firsthand. This has given me a unique perspective on the business of art, and few artists really get to see this part.

I am experienced with numerous mediums but watercolor is my favorite. I teach regularly all over the Southeast, but I am also willing to travel as far as California to teach my students, and I travel to Montana once a year to teach several students in the Northwest.

I enjoy teaching both private and group lessons. I'm very passionate about art and I have been told, by many of my students, that I'm an excellent teacher. I can be very sensitive and nurturing, particularly for the beginner artist or for a student who has been away from the easel for a long time; and conversely, I can be firm and more demanding for the seasoned artist if I think he or she is not putting forth the effort and practicing at home. Building trust and knowing how demanding a student needs me to be starts with being able to "read" the student. In most cases, students need confidence, and I put a lot of emphasis on having a good drawing hand (which is the basis of painting). When a student comes away from one of my classes, he or she will feel empowered to control their medium and create with confidence and without worry and anxiety.

I enjoy watching the expression on my students' faces when they use my techniques and see how truly fun it can be. I also enjoy empowering my students with the confidence they need to create.

About the lesson

Painting lessons offered by Alan are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in Chattanooga. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
