About Shakti

Hello! I am a contemporary abstract artist and art teacher in Madrid, New Mexico. After many years of teaching part time and selling my work on the weekends I opened Mad Contemporary Gallery and Art Center in 2023. I am currently hosting workshops, classes, and mentorship here as well as showing 10 local contemporary artists.

I have taught art in various capacities for 25 years and am a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1998). A few of the places I have taught at include; The Santa Fe Art Institute, The New Mexico School for the Arts, Warehouse 21, and Montana State University.

I teach all ages, and am happy to work with couples or small group classes as well. I provide a fun art experience and teach everything from the elements and principles of design to how to find your niche in art by developing a unique creative expression. I have a critical eye and will help you develop your mark. My specialty is abstract art and I offer an awesome abstract art workshop. I host open studio and drop in art making for folks to come and explore various art materials.

Shakti is an excellent artist and teacher. I worked with her on an event at Cafe Phenix in 2009. Having her live painting at her opening made the show even better and everyone really enjoyed the experience. I worked with her again at a Fundraiser we hosted for the Hopewell Community Garden. Shakti graciously donated her time to come and teach an art lesson to local children and helped make the fundraiser fun for families. I would highly recommend Shakti for parents who are considering lessons and for business and gallery owners.

I had a private lesson with Shakti during a recent stay in Santa Fe. She was a great teacher, encouraging me to try a variety of mediums and explore my relationship with paint and composition. Very knowledgeable and professional while easy to work with. My only regret is that I can't keep on learning with her.
