About Maria

My contemporary realist paintings have been exhibited internationally in museum, university, corporate, and alternative galleries.

The MORRIS MUSEUM (2013) presented Mijares’ one-woman retrospective entitled "IMMORTAL STRUCTURES: Here and There After." Later that year a one-woman exhibit,"Two Ships Esperando" was held at Galeria Siboney in Santander, Spain.

I studied fine art, literature and philosophy at New England School of Art, Boston, MA and painting at Art Students League in Woodstock, NY, before earning a BA in Fine Art from Rutgers University.

My work was awarded a Puffin Foundation fellowship, two Painting Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Inc., among other grants and honors.

PUBLIC ART

A plaza of my four large-scale porcelain enamel on steel murals , entitled "Between Manhattan and Meadowlands" are architecturally integrated at street-level in the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System, Bergenline Avenue Station in Union City, NJ.

I recently installed a public art project for the City of Worcester, MA entitled, "DINERS—Then & Now."

I am currently working on two paintings, "A Day in the Life of a Bus" a permanent public art installation for NJ Transit at Market Street Bus Station in Paterson, NJ.

I have lectured at museums, schools, hospitals, community, cancer and caregivers' support groups. She is featured in two books—a textbook "Fearless Creating" (Dr. Eric Maisel, 1995, G.P. Putnam's Sons, and "Artists Observed" Harvey Stein, 1986, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., NYC. My painting "Cornelia Street Studio" was published in June 2017 POETSArtists magazine, a publication of GOSS 183 Publishing Group, Bloomington, Illinois. Publisher, Didi Menendez.

I have curated and juried numerous statewide exhibitions, and was a founding member and Exhibition Director for the Tweed Gallery in Plainfield from 1980-84.

My work is in the collections of the estate of late John Cardinal O'Connor, NJ State Senator John Lynch, (New Brunswick City Hall) Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo (Santander, Spain), Newark Museum, Montclair Museum, NJ State Museum, Zimmerli Museum, Morris Museum, and the Noyes Museum, and private.
