For painters:
Firstly, I ask the student what they are seeking. What kind of experience they want and need. Some students want to paint to relieve stress. Some students want to learn specific techniques. Other students want to symbolically express views and ideas in thier work. Based on thier response, I create a lesson that will help the student learn the skills they'd like to master.
Poets:
Open and direct dialogue about what the poet wants to accomplish is the best way to teach these students. What would you like to write about? What do you care about? What do you need imporvement on? Understanding where the student is coming from and catering to their poetic needs is my priority when it comes to my poetry students.
