About Chana

I founded Brave Creative Studio with the mission of helping you reclaim your connection to your creative source. In addition to teaching art skills and techniques, I am passionate about working with my students to release blocks and fears around creativity, and empowering you to express your true voice.

I have been painting since I was very young. I studied at the Art School at Old Church in Demarest, NJ and took painting courses at Columbia University.

I believe that art should be fun! When we fall in love with the creative process, that’s when our most powerful works just seem to flow out of us.

I enjoy realistic painting, but lately have been exploring the power of abstract painting as a way of letting go and trusting the process.

As I delved into the world of my own creativity, I realized how much this process was changing my life. It was helping me release perfectionism and fear about art and just go for it. I was creating more art than ever. I started to realize that I could bring these tools to others and empower them to be the amazing artists they truly already are.

I have a Bachelors degree from Barnard College of Columbia University. My degree is in a English and Creative Writing but I took many art classes at college.

I also studied art art at the Art School at Old Church in Demarest, NJ.

Much of my teachings are derived from my personal artistic process (which incorporates skills I have used from my training).

About the lesson

The first step of painting is drawing. Drawing is an amazing way to practice getting creative without any fear. I have students create a series of quick sketches of various objects to help open up their creative process. We practice capturing the subject in the hegemony of the picture plane. We do some straight drawings, some drawings focusing on negative space, some drawings with charcoal, some with ink. Finally, we draw the subject you want to pint. We spend some time warming up with paints, painting with different kind of strokes (who knows, you may love your warm-up paintings so much that you keep them and frame them!). For your painting itself, we focus on building it up with layers and refining with every layer. No layer needs to be perfect, as each new layer gives you a chance to create again.

I have worked with kids ages 10-14 and with adults over the age of 21. I am open to working with students of all ages!

Go with the teacher you resonate with the most. Realize that art is a personal, precious, beautiful activity - you want the right captain in this adventure. Think about what you want to gain, and see how you feel about the teachers you find.

I just ran an amazing workshop through Brave Creative Studio. We did a creative writing exercise and came away with beautiful short stories. We each created mandalas, a type of art known as “sacred geometry.” Each participant’s mandala was so beautiful and unique.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
