About Arlene

Hello,

Thanks for your interest in piano! As past president of North Fulton Music Teachers Association, I can assure you I am dedicated to improving my teaching techniques. I offer opportunities for performing in festivals, recitals and auditions through NFMTA, National Federation of Music Clubs and National Piano Guild.

I have 20 years of experience teaching classical music, and also enjoy teaching jazz, Broadway and pop. I strive to develop students into well-rounded musicians with proper hand position, rhythm, artistic expression and theory knowledge. I am a state winner in piano performance with Georgia Music Teachers Association.

I love seeing the expression on students' faces when we find particular pieces that make them excited to learn! It's fun to delve into a composer's background, why he wrote the piece, and what story or scene he is trying to convey. One piece might convey “Reflections on the Water,” an impressionistic piece by Claude Debussy. Another might bring about a playful and mischievous tone of an unruly “Little Brother” in the piece by American contemporary composer Norman Dello Joio.

I accept students at 8 YEARS OR OLDER. Students MUST OWN A PIANO with 88 weighted keys and a pedal on the floor.

I look forward to speaking with you about your goals.

About the lesson

We meet to discuss student's goals. I show them the materials I use. I play for them pieces of different styles that students can choose from to learn.

ages 6 to adult

prinarily students interested classical music

students must own a piano

Choose a teacher who specializes in piano, and not multiple instruments. Choose one who is constantly looking for ways to improve his/her teaching.

I am in charge of "Celebrate With Music" through North Fulton Music Teachers Association. It is a fun event held in December at North Point Mall. Students take turns playing grand pianos in front of Dillards, Macy's JC Penneys while mall visitors do their holiday shopping. The shoppers love hearing them, and often will comment how much they enjoy the students' playing. It is a great experience playing while minimizing distractions -- people walking around, noise, the choo-choo train giving rides to children. It's a very relaxed setting so many students who get nervous during recitals love this setting.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is the student prepared to practice between lessons? Is the parent going to take an active role in supporting the student?

Deadly! I'm very pleased thus far with my lessons. As an older adult coming back to piano, I appreciate Arlene's systematic approach and help with finding music I enjoy playing. I'm very happy with my lessons and highly recommend Arlene.
