About Kathy

I have a Bachelor of Music from Boston Conservatory and a Master of Music from Boston University and have been a professional musician and teacher for many years. I have taught beginners through university level and beyond and have played flute in several orchestras, chamber ensembles and theater groups. I have taught both flute and piano both privately and for music schools and was adjunct faculty at Bowdoin College for several years.

I love seeing students learn to enjoy music and seeing that first "spark" of understanding when being introduced to new concepts and new styles of music. I really enjoy getting to know each student individually and discovering their unique way of thinking and learning; finding out what they're interested in and what motivates them.

I first started teaching lessons when I was a student at the Conservatory in Boston and one of my professors asked me to start giving lessons to her niece. I discovered that I enjoyed working one-on-one with younger students and was soon hired by a local school system to come in and teach private lessons.

I have two degrees in music and have attended many, many master classes with world-renowned teachers and performers. I also regularly attend conferences and conventions to improve my own playing and teaching skills.

About the lesson

I always ask a lot of questions to find out exactly where the student is as far as their musical education; I never want to assume what they do or do not know. And I always want them to feel absolutely comfortable and feel free to ask me anything they would like. Parents are always welcome at lessons, whether the first time or any time!

I have worked with students as young as 4 on piano to older adult students in their 60's who wanted to either go back to playing the flute or piano again, or learn the piano for the first time.

Always look for a teacher with a music degree who actually enjoys teaching and has done it for several years.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do you own an instrument already or are you willing to purchase one or rent one?

Are you willing to practice on a regular basis?

Why are you interested in playing the piano or flute?

Regarding her musical instruction, Kathy did a fantastic job. As the high school band director, I had several of my own students who studied with Kathy. My students routinely reported enjoying their lessons with her and liked that they were learning a lot. I noticed considerable improvement in these students. What I like about Kathy's instruction is that she knows where she wants each student to go and how she wants to get them there. She stresses fundamentals that can be applied to new music. The real key to her success however is that Kathy is always very aware of what each student needs and adjusts her plans accordingly for each student.
I was sad to see Kathy leave us after only several months. However, I am happy that she and her husband have successfully made a new start in Michigan. I highly recommend Kathy Garner Simpson to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
