About Jennifer
With 30 years of experience, Jennifer Sugerik offers private lessons in piano/keyboard, voice, and music theory. A graduate of BGSU herself , former students have gone on to college scholarships and various music careers from performing, teaching, and directing to producing and industry. Lessons are tailored to each student's needs, learning styles, and desired outcome. Lessons are in the comfort of her home studio with great acoustics and a new Yamaha baby grand piano. Electronic portfolios and communication tools are utilized and overcoming performance anxiety is taught. Adults, children, and every age in between are welcomed (concealed information)
I love working with students of all ages, but especially the beginners. Vocally, I enjoy the challenge of helping a student develop his/her voice to the fullest potential, unlocking endless possibilities for life-long singing professionally, or just for personal pleasure. With piano/keyboard, I enjoy watching each student develop his/her skills and the excitement that comes with progress.
I began teaching while accompanying in high school choir. I fell in love with it from that moment on. As an accomplished organist by the age of 16, I began playing professionally for weddings and church.
I have a degree in Music Education from Bowling Green State University with an emphasis in voice and keyboard. I have post graduate work in music and education from various universities.
I have been a professional church organist for over 30 years. I have been a pianist and accompanist for for over 35 years.
I have taught public school music (choral) for 28 years in Ohio, Virginia, and the past 22 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
My students, public and private, have been extremely successful if their life long study and professions in music.

The first step in successful learning is building a trustful relationship between teacher and student. A safe space to learn which allows a person to be their authentic self while working towards becoming a musician is provided and nurtured. The necessary elements and technique of good musicianship are taught in piano and voice. These universal principles can then be applied to a myriad of styles and genres of music.
I have worked with students ages 3 through senior citizens. I especially enjoy working with beginners and the changing voice. I love all performance styles, music, and genres. (opera, musical theater, classical, gospel, choral, movie music, Christian, gaming music, pop, rock, etc.)
i have students who are now opera singers, musical theater directors, pop singers/songwriters, theme park/cruise ship performers, rock band members, church musicians (organ/piano/contemporary), and teachers.
Please make sure you are taught by someone you get along with and have a mutual respect for. Your teacher needs to be a master musician, have great technique, understand musical/vocal development, and will not foster bad habits or techniques that will either hurt your voice, or inhibit your skills as a musician.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You should communicate your desired outcome to your teacher/coach/mentor. While technique and mastery of basic skills is needed regardless, a student needs to enjoy learning through appropriate, varied, and interesting music literature. This may stem from Beethoven to video game music, Opera to Country, or song writing to Contemporary Christian music. There is a reason there are a billion different songs out there!
