About Jessica
I've been playing the piano for over 50 years. I teach beginners of all ages how to read music and play.
I also teach some music theory to support their understanding of the music they're playing, based on their age appropriateness. I started my own lessons at age 10 and my teacher always included some theory. It made a difference!
I also teach how to read music for people who want to learn how to learn pieces in chorus quicker.
Learning to play an instrument gives you the ability to find peace and joy whenever you want. My brother always asks my mother why she didn't force him to take lessons with me, as he feels short changed about that now! LOL, it's never too late! Let me show you how!
I've always loved teaching, and that's what my degree is in. I love corporate training, but I'm most excited about sharing my varied skills with beginners and helping them realize their passions come to life. I've been presenting training of some kind for close to forty years and I taught piano to beginners of all ages during slow times in my career. Now that I'm retired, it's exactly what I want to do more of!
I have a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a minor in Music, and have tuaght beginner piano whenever my regular work schedule permitted. (I'm retired now and want to do more!)
I have a career full of classroom teaching experience in the corporate world, plus I owned and ran a children's theater and music school up in NJ (Take A Bow Productions) before moving to MD 10 years ago for my 9-5 job.

I select pieces of classical music to help them learn the control required for building a good basic knowledge of the keyboard and how to use it, and supplement that with pieces of popular music based on the student's preference for enjoyment and to learn improvisational skills.
I believe that everyone can learn at a pace that works for them, and I'm very intuitive and empathetic to all at every level. There is no set schedule, but continual progress is the goal! The most important thing to me is that the student enjoys the lessons and is excited about making music.
My piano students have all been beginners, from kindergarten to kindergarten teachers in age! I'm very good at pacing lessons to the individual and taking their personal goals for lessons into heart when designing their plan.
When you're looking for a piano teacher, I think the most important part (other than their knowledge of music of course) is to find a personality that meshes well with the student. Just because someone may be an excellent musician does not automatically make them an excellent teacher. Don't be afraid to change after a couple of lessons if you feel it isn't working.
When I moved from NJ to MD ten years ago, I gifted my old piano, which I had since the age of 10, to one of my students whose parents couldn't afford it. I knew I didn't have room in my new apartment for the instrument.
This past Thanksgiving, I was looking forward more than anything to playing my brother-in-law's piano, but when I got to his home I found he had sold his old instrument and purchased a new electronic, full sized piano! I tried it and fell in love; it felt EXACTLY like a "real" piano and not at all like the electric keyboards I had experienced in the past.
As a retirement present to myself, I bought one as soon as I got home from dinner! It gives me joy daily, and now I want to share that joy with others.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How often do you plan on practicing? Giving your teacher an accurate picture of the level of effort you want to and plan on expending will help them plan lessons appropriate to your pace. And do you have access to a keyboard for this purpose? You don't need a full-size piano to get started, but you will if you want to move forward at some point. It's a good idea before making a big investment to try a few lessons to make sure you're going to stick with it.
