About Cynthia

Welcome, and thank you for your interest. I offer lessons for the wire-strung harp of Ireland and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland; my focus on the harp is traditional music.

I also teach piano to both children and adults, using a classical method and approach. Not limited to "Classical Music," your lessons can include show tunes, modern music, early music; pretty much everything except jazz.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. Highland Circle Music is my private studio in the State of Maryland, which I first opened in 1990 and raised to full–time in March of 1999. In the Spring of 2013, the Montgomery County Music Teachers Association (MCMTA), a chapter of the Music Teachers National Association, elected me to be their President, after serving as Vice President for Publications and editor of the newsletter for ten years. Two years later MCMTA's members elected me to a second term as President. By attending the monthly meetings of this organization, I avail myself of the instructors we engage for our special presentations, thus continuing my own music education.

I have a degree in music, I have been teaching both piano and harp in my studio since 1999, and participate in ongoing educational offerings with the Montgomery County Music Teachers' Association as well as music conferences.

About the lesson

This depends on whether the student is truly new, has never had music lessons before, or is simply new to my studio.

For new beginners, we start with a tour of the piano; first step to playing is understanding how the instrument works.

Most of my harp students come from other traditions, but if the harp is completely new we also start with a tour of the harp, with careful instruction on how to tune the instrument. Pianists are lucky: we mostly hire someone else to tune the piano, unless it's electric which means it's permanently in tune.

It takes time, whether new or transfer student, to get into a routine with each other. That process is like making an acquaintance into a friend. We work on it together.

My piano studio is organized into semesters of 15 lessons. We make a commitment to each other and to the music for the 5 months it takes to get through 15 lessons. The semester plan is available for children from Elementary age through High Schoo. My studio hours for the semester are Monday through Thursday.

For harp and for adult students, I also offer plans that range from one-time lessons to ongoing once a month, twice a month, or weekly lessons. My adult lessons are offered during the day, Monday through Thursday, taking advantage of lunch hour, flex-time, tele-commuting days, or adults who are retired or for whatever reason do not work during normal business hours.
