About Larry

I am Classical and Jazz trained with 35 years of experience.

I also am a published composer with over 20 books published.

I have performed extensively but have cut back on that.

Larry Minsky has received national recognition for his vibrant and appealing jazz piano compositions for students. Larry completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at Queens College in New York and studied music theory and composition with Sol Berkowitz at the Aaron Copland Music School, in New York.

Larry's active professional career included performing in many rock bands, jazz bands, and restaurants and clubs as a soloist. In addition to performing at famous New York restaurants and hotels, including the Waldorf Astoria, Larry also performed with his own band. Concurrently, he continued to study both jazz and classical music with top New York instructors. Larry's music is represented on the National Federation of Music Clubs, and his articles on jazz improvisation have appeared in Clavier magazine.

His creative output includes many solo jazz albums and arrangements of jazz standards published by Alfred/Warner Bros and KJOS, all of which are educational supplemental libraries of piano music written specifically to correlate with all piano methods. In addition there are recorded works not in print, that are contemporary but not predominately jazz works. The oldest of these compositions were originally composed in the late 1970s and later revised. Some are playful in style, most more introspective.They draw on both jazz and classical music--the more modern type.

It began as a way to help with college and grew into a full

time job.

About the lesson

It varies by age. Generally age 5 to 7 students learn proper

position to sit, position of the hands, and the keys-notes, timing and many basics without reading music notation. That is introduced later along with chords-playing of multiple notes with one hand.

With older students I start with note and chord learning. The lesson are made to be fun-I can make the most shy child laugh and relax. I am also capable at teaching very advanced students both classical and jazz. Theory is an important part of the lesson as is improvisation and composing.
