About Lauri
I am a certified music educator specializing in band instrument instruction. I have multiple degrees from University of Michigan and Northern Illinois University. While my professional performance skills are percussion, I am very experienced in teaching all instruments from beginning through intermediate and well beyond that in percussion. My students have ranged in age from 4 years old to 72! I believe that personality compatibility is important so I like to schedule a casual first meeting so that I and the student can get to know each other a little before committing to a first lesson.
I have taught music, in public and private small and large group settings, for over 25 years. One on one connection through music gives me the opportunity to share what I know and help someone else discover their own journey through music. I love watching students see or hear music become clearer and grasp the reality of its magic and unique humaness! With this in mind, I try to let students choose the style of the music whenever possible as we are all motivated by different genres and personal connections that we make through our experiences.
I have been teaching since I was in high school and awarded principal player positions. I loved it then and chose to make it my life's work!
Bachelor of Music Performance degree from University of Michigan and Master of Music Education degree from Northern Illinois University. On going continuing education workshops etc.

I ask them to play something for me. We discuss why they chose the piece and how it makes them feel. I ask them what they most like about music and weekday the hope to learn. We come up with a plan of how to do that as a team.
Ages 4 to 72 years. I have worked with very gifted individuals and learning challenged. We can always find common ground and a learning style that fits!
Meet them, talk to them, ask them anything you want and see how they respond. You'll know if you want to take the next step.
I recently tested a 9 year old boy for his first band instrument choice. On his 4 instrument demo and turn to hold and try it himself he let out an awesome snicker followed by a big smile. "We can try another" I said "but this is probably your instrument" He said nothing but nodded his head, smiled again and went back to exploring what he could make the instrument do. His mom and I exchanged looks and she nodded too and said, "thank you, I totally get it now" Pretty special moment.....
