About Joyce

I have a lengthy business background and musical background. In high school I knew I would be largely self-employed - urged on by my uncle who was also an entrepreneur. He spurred me on to set up my own studios twice.

I give piano lessons to adults and children - beginner to advanced. I started teaching before I had my drivers license in high school. That was over 40 years ago. My students’ parents would drive me to the next house unless it was within walking distance! That lasted one summer until I got my license and could drive myself to homes in town on weekends. I was asked to teach in my town because I was already playing professionally with a large community chorus there. I received a Knight Quality Stations Award (radio stations) in 1974 for my solo piano playing. I have taught continually, through college on weekends until today. 46 years at this and I am still thinking up new "stuff".

I set up my first rented studio space in York, Maine in 1982. I moved to Freeport in 1984 - teaching from a music store in Portland until 1999. I moved into my current studio location in June of that year. It is a lovely space and my dogs (golden retrievers) come to work with me.

In 1995 I was hired by Bowdoin College as a piano instructor and soon I was playing piano with Bowdoin students and faculty on a variety of concerts and other programs. I played live music for ballet classes for 3 years or so in the dance department.

I taught at the University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) for 10 years starting in 1987. That was a 2 week summer camp on campus for high school students. While there I also played student vocal auditions, and performed with other music faculty.

I have a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and graduated summa cum laude. After college, I studied privately with world renowned concert pianists – Frank Glazer and Anthony diBonaventura.

Besides piano lessons, I also offer voice, and woodwind lessons in my studio in Yarmouth. I teach all styles of music by teaching students how to read music. If a student can read it they can play it. I am classically trained but I play all styles.

The first lesson is free. Give me a call and we can set up a time to meet! (concealed information) Every student receives a written studio policy which explains payments and enrollment. Payment is monthly in advance.

I love teaching and providing a one on one experience for people to learn. I started piano just before I turned 5 and it provides a uniquely personal tutoring program which many people never get to experience ever. Everyone is unique and their information is tailored to them. It is a terrific system. I am a solver and a musical cheerleader - there to support each person in their desire to learn music. I laugh and I love to keep it light and I know when its time. It can be intense but why should it be? It doesn't have to be that way.
