About Deanna

Students learn both traditional and modern methods of applied sculpture. I use live animal modeles to educate in clay sketching and self expression. I also use sculpting as a means of relaxation and self confidence to help students overcome personal struggles that they may be experiencing in other areas of their lives.

I’ve studied and perfected my personal skills for the last 15 years and continue to do so. Because I believe one must be a perpetual student to ensure continued improvement and avoid the pitfalls of fails pride. My experience includes living abroad to study sculpture in Madrid, Spain and studying with some of our most successful Bronze craftsman and woman of today. My knowledge ranges from basic sculpting through Bronze casting and everything in between. I’ve been an educator for the past 10 years.

I began teaching when I was asked many years ago by a woman who dearly wanted to learn to sculpt. I informed her that I wasn't a sculpting teacher and didn't have experience teaching at the time. That wasn't important to her. She wanted to learn from me anyway. So I fumbled my way through the lessons and shortly formed a curriculum to help her learn what she wanted.

Since that first curriculum I have improved and perfected my teaching and materials. I've done this by learning from the best in sculpture and putting it into practice myself. I always ask the student to do what I have first done myself so that I understand the struggles and setbacks my students may face.

I am a perpetual student of nature, beauty and truth. From the masters I learn greater kills to see my subjects more truly and with out preconceived ideas in order to depict it in the truest light possible. I have training in mold making and bronze patinas in addition to sculpting and life drawing.

About the lesson

I typically begin prospective students with an interview. This gives the student an opportunity to tell me what they hope to achieve and asses if they feel they will thrive under my tutalige. Once a student has chosen to move forward there are several paths that can be taken. Some students choose to take my private classes others choose a group setting. All student are instructed using traditional and contemporary methods which include anatomy for a strong foundation.

I've worked with students of all ages and backgrounds. From horse back riders, dentists, veterinarians, realastat agents to professional artists I'm always excited to work with each one of my students regardless of age or background because each is an individual and each one brings so much light into my studio!

Most of my students are adults and teens. This is because my curriculum is developed for individuals wanting to grow into skilled sculptors. Wether that skill is applied to traditional bronze casting or for the study of anatomy or instaltion art or whatever my students wish to aspire to I'm here to help them achieve that goal.

My advice is find a teacher who has both artistic skill and a good fit for teaching you.

what do I mean by that? Artistic skill should be their ability to produce outstanding sculpture skillfully using teachable techniques. Their finished work should be something you desire to have influence your work.

What do I mean by a good fit as a teacher? You should find a sculptor who has a personality that is encouraging, supportive and inspiring to you so you can learn easily. And it goes without saying that the teacher should have an interesting and tailored instructional program to help you develop your personal style and technique.

I'm fond of participating in my city's local art fair where children can come and experience the arts hands on. Due to the pandemic we artists have since been providing instructional videos that allow children to work from home.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would suggest asking about a particular concern you may have about sculpting. This could be your concern for not knowing where to start as a beginner, or a struggle you've had in the past with a sculpting technique provided you have some experience.

the answer should give you a good feeling for both the teacher's way of instructing and their personality. From their you can asses if you would learn well from that person.
