About Jack

We are the only Krav Maga gym in central Ohio affiliated with the United States Krav Maga Association. We have instructors with decades of experience and a great passion for the material we teach.

We not only train dozens of members at our Gahanna location, but also private groups around the city including OSU sororities, neighborhood watch programs, Girl Scout troops, corporate team building, and working with local schools.

It's very rewarding watching some of our students with little prior athletic experience get a feel for balance and coordination and power, and over the months actually become skilled in self defense.

Our classes are fun and dynamic in a way that makes it exciting to learn and get stronger.

I started training in Shotokan karate years ago at Ohio State and fell in love with the coordination aspects and health benefits of martial arts. When I was training at a Krav Maga gym many years later, an opportunity came up to begin instructor training and I jumped on it! It was a year long apprenticeship before I began teaching full time.
I then began training and teaching at Buckeye Self Defense where I became a co-owner in the business. We love our gym and all of our members!

Among our four Instructors we literally have decades of teaching experience with the United States Krav Maga Association curriculum. All of our Instructors have experience in other martial arts, but have found that Krav Maga most directly fits our needs.

Our system is a way for most people, regardless of physical skills or prior experience, to quickly learn to keep themselve and their loved ones safe. Our classes are fun, you'll learn great material every day, and you will become stronger and more confident.

About the lesson

We ask that everyone new to our gym take our 45 minute 'Intro to Krav Maga' class first. It's a fun overview of Krav history and some simple techniques, and you can stay for the regular member's class right afterward. The Intro class is $20 and includes a t-shirt!

We have the Intro classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:45 by appointment.

If you like what you see, we have some very reasonable membership rates, where you can train as many times per week as you like.

We teach children starting at age 6, and we have members of all ages up to 73! Teens seem to get a great benefit from our training especially with the rise in bullying these days, and we encourage their parents to participate too. Most of our members are in their 20's and 30's, and nearly half are women.
Our monthly Women's Self Defense workshops are very popular, and we've trained literally hundreds of students over the years.
Krav maga is designed to be effective and easy to learn for people of any age or skill level.

Students who are new to any gym should look at reviews, the instructor's credentials, and years in the business. Then of course take a class or two to see if what they do fits your needs.
Avoid places that engage in strong-arm sales techniques or insist on long term contracts. We don't do either of those things. We want our members to be here because they love the material and the great workout!

Buckeye Self Defense recently hosted 20 students from five states for our periodic Level 5 testing and Black Belt training weekend. It was an exciting four days beginning with the five-hour Level 5 test, then a day of outdoor pistol training, followed by two more days working on the Black Belt curriculum in preparation for the coming test. It was an exhausting and invigorating weekend with some great Krav Maga practitioners and Instructors!
