About Theo

I have actually used my techniques to achieve fluency in Spanish. I won't "teach" language. I will teach you how to acquire a language. If that seems odd or ambiguous, I was in a similar boat.

I adore language learning and spend a large amount of free time immersing in other languages and studying linguistics. I feel confident that what I've discovered will work for others and I enjoy sharing those discoveries. It feels incredible.

In college, a few of my buddies in my Spanish courses wondered how I had studied differently to acquire a sense of comfort, control of the language, and a better accent. Though the reality was that I still had plenty to learn, I helped with those who asked for advice, gave advice to some without their asking, and decided it might be best to look to a professional outlet for my passionate advice giving.

I studied Spanish for 14 years, have a Spanish degree, have travelled to Puerto Rico and lived in the north of Spain for a summer.

I dedicated countless hours of personal time for years trying to get to the bottom of what strategies work in acquiring a new language, learning from those who have achieved their language goals.

I have worked jobs where I had to translate and have tutored Spanish in the past, both to peers and to a younger student.

About the lesson

The first thing I want to know with a new student is what they want to do in the language they're learning. Why do you want to learn this language and what do you like to do in your native language?

Both the language acquisition research and polyglots (those who speak more than three languages) have found that we learn through language input that is:

A: Comprehensible

B: Fun or Intriguing

With that said, I want to know what you enjoy so we can harness that drive and direct it in a way that launches your language ability.

I've worked with high school and college students. Though not Spanish, I have tutored chess to elementary students as well.

If you want to learn how to do something, learn it from someone who has walked the same path that they are teaching. Practically, if you want to learn a language from someone, engage with them and see if they have walked that path and done the work.

As we have all been trying to socially distance, my friends and I had the cool experience of hearing an well-organized concert conducted through a video game. A truly surreal and heartening experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Both the student's and teacher's understanding of the student's needs germinate and develop from communication; ask and comment away!
