About Robin

I have worked extensively as a teacher, both in schools and as a private tutor. I have worked in the learning support departments of secondary schools, helping to teach a variety of subjects to pupils whose native language was not English. I have also worked as an English language assistant in two secondary schools in Vienna, Austria, where I taught English to pupils aged 11 to 22 in full-class, groupwork and one-on-one situations. I have two years' experience as an assistant Drama teacher in primary and secondary classes, coaching pupils in public speaking, stagecraft and presentational skills. As a private tutor I have taught French, German and English Literature and Language at GCSE, AS, A-Level, 11+, 16+ and undergraduate level, and have accrued several hundred hours' of tutoring experience. I have also tutored residentially, providing intensive courses, either tailored to specific exams or to improve understanding and skills more generally, over two, three, four and five days.

I aim to tailor tuition to the pupil's specific needs, identifying areas of weakness and areas of strength in the pupil's understanding early on and developing a course that responds to their particular needs. To this end I work with a variety of different techniques and activities, adapting and conflating exercises in order to help the pupil progress in the subject in a memorable and enduring way. I believe that the key to fulfilling academic potential is a combination of enthusiasm for learning and confidence, and I aim instil both of these in all the pupils I teach. I am relaxed and personable, and I believe a slightly less-formal setting helps pupils to view subjects in a new and accessible light.
