About Steven

I cater to every individual's needs based on their level and goals. I emphasize my curriculum on the basics because it is the foundation to what you'll learn in the future (scales and proper technique). I also use the Suzuki Method to teach the basics and pieces for my beginner students. The first lesson will consist of an introductory lesson which contains the following:

1.) short informal interview to get to know each other

2.) the student will play a musical excerpt of his/her choice

3.) I'll provide feedback on what the student needs to work on and provide a lesson plan that suits the student.

I believe that lessons shouldn't tedious and dull. I would have them to picture a storyline and to correlate their hobbies/interests to their playing. For example: "Imagine you're gazing at the stars when playing Twinkle Twinkle."

I enjoy teaching because I believe that everyone should have access to music of any kind. Without music, we wouldn't express our emotions clearly. As a teacher, I like to share what I've learned throughout my 14 years of musical experience. It is something that I treasure deeply.

I started teaching through the son of my mom's friend. They were in need of a teacher, so I offered to teach him.

I started playing the Violin at the age of 6. I've started taking private lessons and joined a community orchestra in Palmdale, CA. I switched to the Viola at the age of 13. Since then, I've attended the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, CA for 4 1/2 years. I served as Principal Viola for Colburn Youth Orchestra and Colburn Chamber Orchestra. I have a Master of Music degree in Viola Performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Germany). I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston MA.

About the lesson

1.) short informal interview to get to know each other (5-10 mins)

2.) the student will play a musical excerpt of his/her choice (duration TBD). The student has the option to record in advance.

3.) I'll provide feedback on what the student needs to work on and provide a lesson plan that suits the student. (5-10 mins)

I've worked with beginner violin and viola students.

I suggest to take a few lessons with the teacher that you're interested in. It takes some time to get used to the teacher's teaching style and curriculum. If you don't feel it's a right fit, it's ok to find another teacher. Just because a teacher has a good reputation, it doesn't mean that he/she is the right fit for you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I encourage my students to ask for help if when needed. Students should address their needs before the lesson in order to avoid any miscommunications down the road.
