About Aurora

I've been teaching fiddle for about 10 years now. I started playing when I was 6 - trained both classically and in traditional fiddle styles, so I specialize in helping classically trained violinists develop a more traditional style (in bluegrass, old-time, or country music). I've taught music with Dancing with the Spirit and Fairbanks Bluegrass Camps for Kids as well as teaching private lessons. I'm also a certified public school teacher. I've played with a number of different bands over the years, including the Hannah Yoter Band and The Norris Bowers Band. You can check out my music with those groups here:

I've worked with students of all ages, and am happy to work with anyone from 5-100.

So....

If you're a total newbie who has never touched a fiddle, I can get you playing basic tunes from our first lesson.

If you're a beginner who has some experience, I can help you work on some elements to spice up your playing.

If you're a classically trained violinist looking to get into traditional fiddle styles, I can get you sounding like a fiddler.

If you're interested in learning how to improvise, I have tricks and tools for that.

If you want to learn more about jamming practices and etiquette, I have lots of tools and resources to get you jamming within a few weeks.

And if you just want to have FUN with the fiddle, we can DO that!!!

I won't judge you if you don't practice - I know everyone has busy lives! If you only have time for a weekly lesson but no time to practice, I'll give you tips and tools you can stash in your pocket for whenever you do get that time!

While I can travel in order to teach, at this time, I am following COVID safety protocols, so I am encouraging students to take lessons with me over zoom. After each lesson, I'll send you a video of what we covered that you can use to practice. If you would rather do in-person lessons, I'm only doing in-person lessons in an outdoor space, and wearing masks.

I was Suzuki trained for 7 years.

I've played fiddle for almost my entire life, and have been teaching fiddle for my entire adult life.

I studied in East Tennessee State University's Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country music program. Throughout my education, I studied jazz theory, sound technology, bluegrass history, songwriting, ear training, bluegrass fiddle with Rhonda Vincent fiddler Hunter Berry, and old-time fiddle with prize-winning fiddler Joseph Decosimo.

I've shared the stage with musicians of the highest caliber, including Brittany Haas, Darol Anger, and country band Lonestar. I currently play in a band with Jason Norris, previously of the nationally-acclaimed progressive bluegrass band Bearfoot.

I've helped kids and adults of any age and ability level improve their skills and gain the confidence to jam with other people!

About the lesson

We jump right in!

I'll ask you a few questions before we have our first lesson to find out more info about where you're currently at with the fiddle. If you still need to buy a fiddle, I'll point you in the right direction for that.

Then we'll pick a time... and start playing tunes!

Details

I charge $50 an hour, or $30 for a half-hour. I recommend an hour for adults and teenagers (or kids with long attention spans), and a half-hour for kids under 10 or so.
