About Jolene

I love being able to share my passion for music with my students and help them reach their musical goals. Having been educated in orchestration and composition at Berklee College of Music I am able to also teach my students a plethora of music theory. I am also able to create arrangements specific to my students' skill level and interests.

Having played at a professional level with many local symphonies I understand what it takes to get to that level and because of that I have had a lot of success getting my students into professional and amateur orchestras. Many of my school age students have played in our local junior and youth symphonies. I love being able to help students prepare for those audition moments mentally and musically.

I have experience teaching both children (starting at 4 years old) and adults and I build lesson plans for each specific student. I also offer multiple opportunities to play in ensembles in public and build confidence through performance. I strive to create well rounded, confident and happy musicians.

I have always loved helping my peers learn difficult passages in orchestras, so when the opportunity to teach others through Menchey Music arose I happily accepted. I taught with them before creating my own teaching practice.

I have been educated in performance on Cello, Violin, Viola and Bass. As well as obtaining a degree for Orchestration and Composition with a specialty in composing for video games, tv and movies.

About the lesson

I often start by discussing why the student chose the instrument they did and hearing about what they hope to achieve with their musical education. Teaching a student that wants to play professionally is very different from teaching a student that aspires to write video game music. I also find out what the student knows currently, what type of music they enjoy and how much time they think they will have to practice weekly. Once I determine their current knowledge level and where they'd like to go, I formulate a lesson plan specific to that student's needs.

I have experience working with students with learning and physical disabilities, students as young as 4 years old, students as old as 65 years old and every age in between.

I would encourage anyone looking for any teacher to make sure the teacher has a good teaching background or education. Too many people claim to be teachers when they barely understand music. A bad teacher can do a lot of damage to a student. Not just learning wrong but also improper positions can lead to physical ailments. Also find a teacher you enjoy working with. Music is supposed to be fun!

I was recently playing for a symphony that had the opportunity to record a holiday commercial. That whole experience was very informative and very memorable. The many different takes require the symphony to play at the exact same tempo for the whole recording. It was a great experience and one I will never forget.
