About Gerrit

My name is Gerrit, and chess has been a passion for most of my life. What began as bonding with my dad grew into a lifelong pursuit of understanding, playing, and thinking deeply about the game.

As a FIDE National Instructor, I focus on guiding students in a calm, structured, and principle-driven way. I help players of all levels, especially beginners and intermediates, develop strong foundations, positional understanding, and, most importantly, the thinking skills and mindset to make confident decisions over the board.

I encourage students to ask questions, reflect on their own thought process, and experience the game fully — not just memorize moves. Watching learners transform from uncertain players into thoughtful, independent thinkers is the most rewarding part of my coaching.

Chess has shaped how I approach challenges, decisions, and problem-solving in life, and I aim to pass that same sense of clarity, intuition, and curiosity to my students.

About the lesson

Hi, I’m Gerrit — a FIDE National Instructor and passionate chess coach from South Africa with tournament experience and a deep love for teaching. I’m also a candidate provincial arbiter, bringing a strong understanding of chess rules and event standards to my lessons.

I focus on helping beginners and intermediate players truly understand the game, think critically, and develop a strong mindset, not just memorize moves. My lessons are calm, structured, and adapted to each student’s needs, combining opening principles, tactics, endgame basics, and practical advice. Whether you're starting from scratch or aiming to reach the next level, I guide you with patience, purpose, and a focus on long-term improvement.

I teach in both English and Afrikaans, depending on the student’s preference.
