About Allan

I am a filmmaker with a wealth of experience, starting as a film editor and subsequently becoming a director and producer in the UK with BBC TV. I now have my own company and regularly work professionally as a film editor on FCPX, I recently completed a multi-camera edit of a classical concert, you can see a clip from this below. (This edit of a piece called Die Havel is 25 minutes long so don't feel you have to watch all of it!) If you would rather watch a conventional documentary then here is a film on sculptor Laurence Edwards that I edited for Producer / Director Phil Cairney... (concealed information)

I like to teach one to one and at an hourly rate but I am happy to customise a course to fit the needs of a student. Each session looks at how to use FCP's tools from basic editing to more sophisticated use of effects. I also teach students the art of editing, looking at pacing, motivation, sound work and more. At the end of the course you will be confident that you can assemble, fine cut, layer sounds and know how to create master files. My goal in teaching is for you to learn by example and have fun doing so!

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

My first experience of using a computer was on the original Apple 128K desktop which was not networked and had a 9 inch screen, keyboard, a mouse and everything was saved to a floppy disc. It was however a "drag and drop" computer which made it ahead of the competition. I used it to write scripts at the BBC and it was a real revolution from using page after page of paper on a mechanical typewriter!
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

During my career I have experienced many turning points in my industry, the transition from film to tape and then to digital is probably the most revolutionary in using cameras and editing. I think it's difficult to separate developments that are a passing trend from those that are truly a turning point but it is possible that the miniaturisation and accessibility of using cameras and editing kits e.g. mobile cameras and video recording / editing will continue, making high quality content production available to more producers.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My expertise, gained since a teenager in the mid 1970's is in film making, specifically production, filming and editing. What was a hobby turned into my career and I worked for the BBC as a film editor, location and studio director and producer from 1983 until 2010. I am also a passionate photographer and have had the chance to also use my skills in a professional capacity most recently as stills photographer on a BBC Arts Documentary, "Andy Warhols America."
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

My role models relate to my early interest in film and the arts. I was a fanatical "Monty Python" fan from their first BBC series. Later as a student I had the chance to work with the camera team on the film, "Time Bandits" directed by one of the Python team Terry Gilliam. My "claim to fame" is that I handed him a cup of soup during shooting, forever a moment to treasure. Other inspiration comes from artists and musicians, I marvel at the sheer genius of Picasso whose creativity, quantity and variety of work over a lifetime is breathtaking.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I grew up on a block of flats in an industrial city in the north of England at a time when all that was expected of you was that you went into the factory and worked with steel. My parents were not wealthy but they supported me with love and gave me the belief that anything was possible. Now I look back over the years and see a progression from those times that I would not have believed during my teenage years. My dream, to work for the BBC, to direct and produce at the Television Centre in London and to work with some of the best artists and technical staff in the world all came true. One thing is clear after all these years and that is that is that the window of opportunity opens briefly and you have to be ready to take it. Education and training prepares you to be ready which is one reason that I want to offer my skills and experience to students and help them reach their potential.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

Relax and enjoy, its a machine, you are the human and much more complicated!
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

I have built web sites and tinkered with HTML, CSS3 but now have taken to more WYSIWIG sites such as Wordpress. Away from the screen and keyboard I have lots of passions, I play tennis and golf, play the guitar and am a fanatical football follower of my childhood team, Sheffield Wednesday!
  • What makes you a Superprof in IT?

IT and computers are a means to an end, a tool used to reach a goal. For me that is writing a script, editing a film, manipulating a photographic image or communicating with others. Being human means being creative, whether you are baking a cake or planning to build a skyscraper. Technology continues to develop and in the coming years new programmes or devices will change the way we work. However, in the field of creative industries people will still want to be enthralled, thrilled, enlightened, laugh and cry and to do that the skills we hold in our minds will always be important.
