About Madeleine

I am currently a final-year student at the University of Birmingham, studying International Relations and Spanish. My academic journey has been shaped by a strong international focus, supported by extensive travel, language immersion and volunteering experience.

During my gap year, I was fortunate to explore Latin America, immersing myself in countries including Costa Rica, Panama and Cuba. In Costa Rica, I volunteered at a conservation reserve along the Caribbean coast, gaining first-hand experience of sustainability and community-led development. These experiences deepened my global awareness and strengthened my ability to adapt, communicate and engage with different cultures

Before beginning university, I also lived in Granada, Spain, where I attended a Spanish immersion language school. This experience significantly enhanced my linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding, laying a strong foundation for my degree. In my third year of university, I studied abroad at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in the Political Science faculty, where I developed my Spanish fluency while studying in a fully Spanish-speaking academic environment.

I strongly believe that confidence and fluency come from regular, active speaking, and I am passionate about helping younger students develop this skill alongside strong grammatical foundations.

I have several years of experience supporting students academically through tutoring, mentoring and student representation, as well as professional experience with organisations such as Amnesty International, Praxis and the Gumbi Education Fund.

About the lesson

My lessons are structured, engaging and exam-focused, tailored to each student’s needs and learning style. I focus on building confidence, concentrating on fluency, grammar, exam preparation, supported by cultural context from my studies and year abroad in Madrid. I will use authentic materials such as news articles in the target language and cultural integration approaches, such as films, and music alongside the general exam specification to develop a deeper understanding of the language and provide further opportunities to enhance fluency.

Lessons usually last 60 minutes, although longer sessions are available for exam preparation. My lessons are suitable for GCSE and A-level students, typically aged 14–18, (but can include any Secondary School age), including those seeking grade improvement, exam confidence or extension beyond the syllabus. I am to create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable to ask questions and reach their full potential.

Some of my previous experience: I was a Private English Language Tutor in Madrid - focused on grammar, pronunciation and conversation fluency with two young Spanish students. I was also a Spanish Tutor at Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar school- tutored GCSE Spanish speaking to the younger years - covered all aspects of the syllabus including vocabulary, speaking practice, grammar and fluency.
