About Derek

I have been fortunate enough that before returning to academia and starting teaching, I had a long career in media and spent half my life living outside the UK, mainly the USA and Italy. My many professional and travel experiences are basically an extension of my continuous curiosity. I find the world and people fascinating. As I am a person with many interests, from cycling to cinema to cooking, it made sense to me to take a lifelong interest in history and get a degree on the subject for two reasons. Firstly, the study of history and current affairs is really the study of ideas, how they came about, how they evolved, and pleasantly surprising, how good ideas survive the arc of history. Secondly, I believe if you can stimulate curiosity you are not just teaching a person something, you are actually teaching the person how to continue to learn through their own curiosity.

I obtained my First-Class Honours Degree in History & Politics after a long media / communications career in the United States. I came late to formal study but the advantage of that was that I was able to combine my passion for learning with real world experience.

I am now based in Glasgow and happy to conduct one-to-one or group tutorials either online or face-to-face.

Philosophically, my key approach is as follows:

Through genuine curiosity and experience I keep a strong eye on economic, social and cultural news and trends, as I believe this helps me understand and then explain a more rounded way to looking at events current or past. I take a strong view that facts are essential, and the discipline of learning the academic process is an essential grounding. However, I also consider a wider interest in not just names, dates in places but the actual world, will not just produce better academic outcomes but contribute to education more intellectually curious and empathetic people.

I believe this approach is best suited to Secondary School and University Undergraduate Level students.

Academically, my key specialist areas are:

Modern History - from the French Revolution through today, with a keen interest in the 20th Century period, Europe, the United States, China and Russia.

Politics / Modern Studies / International Relations – the main political traditions and their evolutions, as well as a strong understanding of the different national, (democratic or autocratic), and supranational systems and institutions, (such as the U.N. or E.U), how they were created and how they affect today’s world.

I also serve as a Panel Member for Children’s Hearings Scotland. Besides Disclosure Scotland background check I am required to keep up date my training and compliance. My role on these panels involves making serious decisions that can affect a child’s welfare, and that involves listening, empathy, sensitivity and flexibility, because every child is different. I therefore believe that talking a flexible bespoke approach to each student / tutor relationship leads to better engagement and thus better outcomes.
