About Toby

Throughout my fifteen year teaching career in state secondary education in the UK I have been judged an outstanding teacher in the delivery of both GCSE and A-Level. In 2013 I gained advanced skills teacher (AST) status, and was certified a lead practitioner assessor a year later by the Angela Ruskin University. I was an assistant headteacher for two years, before being compelled to return to the classroom as head of humanities and head of department for history at a school closer to home. At my most recent school I was proud to deliver the best set of history GCSE results the school had ever seen in my second year as head of department. Once my department had established perennial success we began to focus on developing our more able provision, and in my final year the history department achieved the highest percentage of grades 7 to 9 across the school. Although the majority of my experience at GCSE is with Edexcel, I have taught AQA, WJEC and OCR. At A-level, with my own specialism being that of British history in the 19th and early to mid 20th Century, results were consistently high, with ALPS scores well above national average and many students going on to study history at degree level. The exam board I chose for A-level was AQA, although I have experience delivering Edexcel. With the birth of my daughter I have chosen to become a stay at home dad; however, my passion for helping students from all backgrounds achieve their full potential has not diminished in the slightest and I bring with me a wealth of experience, high quality lessons and enthusiasm for the subject that I love.

My teaching methodology is to teach backwards from the exam criteria. That is, through a deep understanding of exactly what the examiners are looking for, lessons are centred around developing the skills needed to gain the highest grades. Practically, this means delivering the content by focusing on a past exam question and then, step by step, building the necessary knowledge and understanding of the topic, along with an in-depth understanding of the marking criteria and how to break into the highest bands. To facilitate this I often provide model answers which my students use to pick out the criteria which puts this answer into the highest band, while establishing the knowledge needed through the use of high quality worksheets and multi-media platforms. At A-level one of the biggest challenges for students is developing source evaluation skills, and, through attending multiple exam board certified training events, I have developed a proven ability to support students in this area. I also focus on techniques that will enable students to achieve the highest grades in their essay writing, focusing on helping them to produce a structured, balanced and persuasive piece that maintains an argument from introduction to conclusion.
